You grind if you want. You can refine items to get magic, if you need a shortcut.

If I recall right, once you get your magic stat high enough you draw 9-10 at a time anyway. Plus, most of the magic isn't worth having anyway. And if you do a one character runthrough like I did that's even less magic required. And the best stuff can be refined early anyway. There's basically that initial grind to get refine and enough money for some tents, then refine Life and junction to HP and spam limits at low HP, drawing against bosses as necessary for new stuff.

Summon Night Swordcraft Story 2 requires no grinding and is a simplistic, but quite charming game.

i only had to grind on 2 occasions in final fantasy 7, and you dont really need to be that leveled up to beat sephiroth(spellings probably wrong). Maybe its just me but the only other ff game i've played, which is ff9, i had to grind a lot.
