01. Black

Black isn't nearly the greatest fps ever made. But it's the one that really drew me into the genre and showed me how cool and realistic a game like this could be.

Black almost never gets any love, which is a shame. The sound design is amazing, although I will admit that the gameplay is a little samey after a while.

It's not my favourite genre but I've played some here and there with a preference for ones on PC because I can barely control an FPS properly with a controller and find the keyboard-mouse combination much better (but I still suck at it regardless).

My favourite two franchises (and unfortunately short lived) are No One Lives Forever and Max Payne. Ok so there will be a max payne 3 but that game looks so far removed from the first two it's hard to even consider it as part of the same franchise but I guess one has to wait until the game is actually released before any conclusions can be made.

No One Lives Forever is a funny spy spoof in the vein of Austin Powers. One of the main highlights is sneaking and listening in on the most random yet hilarious conversations between guards and then shooting the crap out of the poor suckers. The 2nd one is not quite as good as the first game, it's shorter too but it still has some hilarious moments.

Max Payne of course was (I think) the first to introduce the bullet time mechanic combined with a gritty noir setting/story. I have a hard time choosing whether I like the 1st or the 2nd one the best although the games are short, they're both great fun.

oh! i also forgot about Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast. so cool. i liked the fact that i could switch between first and third person for the gunplay/force powers combo.
