The best way to get a crowd on your side is to be yourself, it even works for people who are assholes. That's why I've never done the knock knock joke. Just ain't my style.
I'm actually trying to fine tune up a joke about retro games. I have a two or three minute rant about how my wife thinks I'd choose games over her, and I was thinking of adding something close to:
"Maybe my wife is right. Last night one thing led to another and I realized I was humping her in the up up down down left right left right pattern".
Then I need to think of a decent tag, something like:
"Now she thinks I cheat".
That's what is awesome about comedy, you constantly re-write jokes and find ways to add tags and how to tie your opener to your jokes. That, and comedians are some of the nicest people you'll meet.
