Virtua Fighter 5 is very fast if you decide to play it that way. Virtua Fighter games feel clunky and slow until you learn the commands. Now when i fight with Jacky online newbies don't even know whats going on. I really wouldn't want SF4 to play like Virtua Fighter at all, just saying IMO VF5 can be fast and requires expert technique to be played properly.
Didn't the SNES version of SF2 have Sheng Long in Ryu's winning phrase? Did that originate from the EGM story during US translation or something?

The Sheng Long thing in the SNES game was a mistranslation that EGM created the hoax around. It was supposed to say 'You must withstand my Shoryuken to stand a chance' but they put 'You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance.' Not sure how they made that mistake but EGM took that and ran with it. Sheng Long did sort of come true though, in the form of Akuma.
A new twist:
The brazilian blog that started this fiasco (Blogeek) has put up a statement stating that Ziff Davis is threatening them. This is probably over the images more so than the game details, but it provides more support to the fact that Blogeek may have an inside leak on real information and not just the game's shots.

Actually, Virtua Fighter 2 was decently fast as long as you kept your feet on the ground. If you were foolish enough to jump, well, you had to wait around for something to happen... :)
I'm not sure a 3D fighter would make as much sense that fast. Speed in 2D fighters can help cover missing animation frames. In a 3D fighter there would be worry about people getting confused by 3D animations, behavior of the 3D models, or simply the camera angles. It's much easier to have things move quickly when stylized 2D animation controls what you can see and how you perceive.
I mean, are there any 3D fighters, even crappy ones, that are as fast as the faster 2D games?

www.1up.com has the first video of Street Fighter 4 in the form of their team going to Tokyo and interviewing the dev team in detail about gameplay, graphics, and concept. This is crack. Check it out.

It's quite pretty in motion, but I'm still sensing too much EX in the gameplay here.gradualmeltdown wrote:www.1up.com has the first video of Street Fighter 4 in the form of their team going to Tokyo and interviewing the dev team in detail about gameplay, graphics, and concept. I'm not liking it. It still looks too blocky and unorganic. Hand-drawn animation just seems so much more natural.

I don't know about "natural" but I think what it comes down to is that Street Fighter's controls and movesets are just tailored for 2D and not 3D. When you watch this clip, it just looks like a 3D game trying to be 2D but failing. It's not quite like a 3D game truly made to be in 3D, like Soul Calibur, Virtual Fighter, and Smash Bros.racketboy wrote:Definitely a Street FIghter EX vibe there.Mozgus wrote:It's quite pretty in motion, but I'm still sensing too much EX in the gameplay here.gradualmeltdown wrote:www.1up.com has the first video of Street Fighter 4 in the form of their team going to Tokyo and interviewing the dev team in detail about gameplay, graphics, and concept. Just watched their full vid.
I agree it looks pretty different. But the guys on the vid said over and over that the gameplay is essentially the same. They do seem to be tailoring it for a western audience. I think it looks interesting, we have to remember this game could be a year and half away from release. I'll say this - as someone who hasn't played much SF since the early Alpha games, it definitely has my attention because it's different in some way. I'd rather devs try something different on top of core gameplay than just do incremental changes year after year after year. Look at Burnout Paradise. Everyone's bitching because it's different, but they've already made four of the same game so far. And there's been what, two dozen SF games so far?
I think that's the other thing to remember: Capcom always does iterations of SF games to address fans' concerns. Even if the first iteration of SF4 isn't perfect, they'll add or subtract something along the line to improve it.
One thing I really thought looked crappy was the way some special moves turned the entire screen black. That looks irritating.
