Honestly, I believe the combat for this game was one of its strongest points. I honestly can't think of any Beat 'Em Up with a deeper combat system with the exception of maybe Guardian Heroes, and even then I feel like this was deeper. (Granted, I still haven't played Dishwasher, but it felt much deeper than Castle Crashers to me.)
Hmmm, I don't know. Depends how you define deeper I guess. I guess if you mean technical gameplay...well, I don't know. I didn't really see that in Scott Pilgrim, I found the gameplay more sloppy than technical. And those early stat boosts in the mystery room don't help matters as they kind of break the game. They probably should have made the prices higher
When you look at depth in terms of content though, I think Castle Crashers gave you more moves and had greater combo potential. The air combos you could do were insane and the game gave you more ground combos than Scott Pilgrim does. The upgrade system had more depth too. Choosing what stat to put points into not only affected your performance, but what kinds of abilities you would unlock. Plus, you had weapons you could choose that gave you different stat boosts and abilities. Plus, the animal familiars, some of which could affect gameplay rather drastically(one of them makes that Ice level boss a joke). Plus, Castle Crashers was a longer game with more interesting boss fights. More variation in gameplay too(the swimming level, fire level, ice level, the brief vertical flight before the final stage, swamp level, camel riding stage, volley ball mini-game, etc.). It seemed like Scott Pilgrim tries to mix things up late in the game. I feel like Castle Crashers does everything Scott Pilgrim tries to do better. It's got beautiful cartoony visuals, a retro feel, some River City Ransom influence(and Guardian Heroes too), lots of humor and as great as Anamanaguchi is, I'd still rate the Newgrounds material in Castle Crashers higher. Four player play works better too, not quite as chaotic.
Plus, combat was just more intuitive and fluid to me in CC. It's something racketboy mentioned in his last post, combat in Scott Pilgrim doesn't quite feel right to me. Too stiff and slow and collision detection seemed a little hit and miss at times, I just didn't enjoy it. Don't get me wrong though, I did have some fun with Scott Pilgrim, I just don't think it's THAT great. If I scored it on gameplay alone, it'd be a five. When you factor in the graphics, music and retro fan service though, I'd probably rate it a 7 out of 10
