Hmm, Arcanum... why does that sound familiar... Is that the one that used to boast that it had Dwarves with Guns?

I definitely haven't tried those games, but at this point it is kinda moot. Back then, when I wanted to know of a good RPG for the PC, people always - ALWAYS - said Diablo. It's just kinda implanted the thought that all PC RPGs are like that.

But, now that I think about it, there was one PC RPG I did enjoy. Never finished it, but I did spend a decent amount of time on it back in the day. It was called Betrayal At Krondor.

I don't think I could get back into RPGs, Western or Eastern, if I tried at this point though. I just can't get into them anymore.

The best story in my opinion is Shadows of the Colossus, which is strange to say because there are very few words spoken. However, the story is told through the games actions and atmosphere. Despite only having a few lines of dialogue, Shadow of the Colossus tells an incredibly romantic and heartbreaking tale of a man that would risk life and limb and even his eternal sole to slay giant noble beasts on a possibly empty promise that his true love's life will be restored if he does so. It tells the story of great companionship between a man and his horse searching through desolate plains. It tells the story of loneliness and isolation. Feeling abandoned. Grieving lost love. Betrayal. Ancient mystery.

I think Shadow of the Colossus is the greatest example of videogame storytelling because it is told almost entirely through the play control, making it a type of narrative that is only possible in the videogame medium. It is beautiful. It is epic. It is an unforgettable gaming experience.

The story of Breath of Fire was decent I suppose... nothing overly complex, but the characters really sold it. Those BoF characters are beyond memorable. It's too bad Capcom has official discontinued BoF.

Breath of Fire II and III are the best, as far as I am considered. (and most fans, I believe)

I'd say Lost Odyssey. The 1st mini story was extremely powerful and moving, as are various moments as Kaim battles with his immortality.

I wouldn't pick it as my best story, but Lost Odyssey would probably make my top ten list. It is sorely under rated and by far the best RPG you can get on the 360.

Big surprise, FFT has my favorite storyline. The character development and sheer depth has, in my opinion, never been matched in a video game. It's extremely complex, but completely coherent and manages to not be over-the-top and ridiculous. Also, people really, really exaggerate the quality of the translation. Yes, there are a few egregious translation errors/typos, but overall the dialogue is perfectly understandable.

Also, I really like the story in the Diablo games. They don't force it on you, but if you take the time to read all the dialogue, and especially the tomes scattered throughout the first Diablo that explain the backstory, you'll find a very interesting plot that does the whole Heaven vs. Hell theme very well.
