Re: Does the size (GB) of a game effect whether you will buy it?
I never worry about space concerns. My main HDD in my PC is 750 GB used primarily for music and games. I also have 2 external hard drives: 500 GB, 1 TB. For gaming consoles my Xbox 360 has 120 GB may upgrade to 250 GB eventually but my main use of space is installed games, and I delete them when I'm done with a game as well. My PS3 has the 60 GB HDD and I'm gonna be upgrading it to 500 GB to future proof it for new games especially since Shank is 2 GB and demos/betas can range from 250 MB-2GB which can fill up quick. I also install tons of games and download lots of videos as my PS3 is also used as a media server.

Short answer yes games that take up alot of hard drive would put me off buying them, years ago all I used to play was pc games now its very rare I play them at all.Its so much simpler with games consoles and I think most of the genral public feel that way to.

I like big games. Shit, I remember buying The Eleventh Hour, which had something like 7 CDs. When are we going to see a 7 DVD game?

I am on a laptop, so that limits my hard drive usage. It's got a total of 360 GB, which is pretty maxed out at the moment between all of my music, games, pictures, and everything else. If I had the money at the moment I would go buy a nice PC, but I'm in the process of closing on a house, so money is tight.

Please don't take this as a snarky response, but I'm assuming you have a lot of your music ripped to your Laptop? You have a large music collection like me. So if you're using the convenience of playing from your PC, that's where a lot of your space went. You have the option of playing discs and using that space for game installs.J T wrote:I am on a laptop, so that limits my hard drive usage. I see great deals on external hard drives on SlickDeals all the time. e.g. $60 for a 1tb external.

Don't know about buying it, but I'm pretty sure the size of the game can effect whether people pirate it

I do not worry about space either. I have a 1 TB HDD and it is not even half full and I could just add a second drive or use external drives if it did get full.

If the game is prohibitively large then ripping scenes will work out a way of compressing the game down whilst removing all non-essential data. I've seen games that were 4GB reduced to less than 500mb and still fully playable. It's quite impressive really.ZeroAX wrote:Don't know about buying it, but I'm pretty sure the size of the game can effect whether people pirate it
Regarding space I have just purchased ANOTHER 1TB drive after filling another 1TB drive. So in total I have 5TB of space on this system. 2TB in a Lacie Big Disk Quadra over eSATA which hosts all my music and video work. 1TB for my Windows 7 operating system. 1TB for my OS X operating system. 500GB drive just for random files and my music/video collection (this used to have my OS X OS on it but I've since transferred that onto my new 1TB drive) and a 500GB external drive that I can just shove masters/project folders onto and take with my Macbook Pro.
You guys with less than 1TB worth of space, I don't know how you do it. I'm always having to delete shit or archive to DVD just to struggle with the 4TB I had before I caved and got another 1TB drive. It's extremely hard to keep redundancy with literally terabytes of information that needs to be stored on DVD and on HDD in case anything happens to the drive or the system itself. I've got cakeboxes upon cakeboxes full of DVDR/CDRs stored at my mother's house just in case.

Ken Thompson is quoted as saying "The steady state of disks is full". In other words, no matter how big your disks are, they will always end up full. In that regard, 5TB isn't really any better than 1TB. You'll be deleting/backing up eventually.Niode wrote: You guys with less than 1TB worth of space, I don't know how you do it. Personally, I do have a 2TB array. And yes, it's full. I'll get more eventually, but for now I'm just pruning. Take some spare time to go over what I have and evaluate whether I really need it. Doing that is just as valuable as getting more space, if not more so. Having all the space in the world doesn't help if it's all clogged up with stuff you'll never use.
BTW, 5TB? You have RAID on that, right?
