Damn straight. Spaceballs got it right with having a dual-sided DVD with one side WS and the other FS.

Something not mentioned here that pisses me off is copy protection on a DVD. I like to rip my DVDs to my HTPC so I don't have to get up and look for a disc. (Boxee's pretty cool, too.) An example of this is The Simpsons Movie on DVD. I bought it, tried to rip it several times and each time I got a gray screen in the middle of the movie with the Fox intro music playing. I drove me fucking nuts. I eventually went on the Handbrake forums only to get laughed at. Why was I being laughed at? The solution was that the DVD had two tracks for the film, one being purposely corrupted. All I had to do was select the second track. I just love copy protection that gimps my product. /rant

Back on topic, I usually don't care about multiple editions unless a different apsect ratio or a shitty box is involved. Like CRT, I hate those eco-packages. Everytime I get one, I replace it with a regular DVD case from Wal-Mart. I'm not kidding. I also hate boxed sets. They look like shit, get easily torn up/crinkled, and really fuck with my obsession to keep my media looking uniform. They're just as bad as CD Digipaks. The first four 24 boxed sets are the worst examples of this in my possession. They hold 6-7 discs, but take up more room than three standard DVD cases. Utter ridiculousness. You know how much room Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. Season Two (5 discs) takes up? Approximately the same room as a standard DVD case. If you look reeeealy closely, you can see it takes up a little bit more room. This is what all Season DVDs need to do. They look nicer, don't stick out like a white guy in a soul-food restaurant, and are much more resistant to wear and tear. Well, at least Fox made up for it with Season Seven being in a case like Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. Season 2. The worst kinds of boxed sets are the ones that only hold one or two discs. I'm looking at you X-Men 3 and Ghostbusters 1 & 2.

The only exception are The Simpsons Season DVD boxed sets. I have the first five seasons and love them. They're sturdy, uniform, have cool designs inside, shit, they even come with a letter from Matt Groening. Too bad it was thrown out the window with Season Six. Seriously, what the hell am I supposed to do with this round box? I know there's a regular boxed version, but I haven't been able to find it outside of teh intarwebz.

To steer this back on topic, I get infuriated when there's an edition of a movie with something I'm interested in (ie. alternate ending, deleted footage, interviews, etc.) and it's in one of the things I mentioned above.

...I hate DVDs.

only thing I want to respond to concerning the above is that I like CD digipaks actually... :( At least, I like them so long as they aren't the wrong dimensions or something (too tall, too short, etc) or don't have the booklet ATTACHED to the case.

This thread should just be about media packaging in general...

What about the Digipaks that fold out? I was so pissed when I found out my copy of Breaking the Silence by Heathen came in a digipak like that. The image it had was cool, but did it have to fold out?

This thread brings up a lot of the things that infuriated me when I used to more seriously collect movies and tv shows. I didn't have a lot of problems when I used to collect anime though, but damn that shit got expensive

Anyone have Alien Quadrilogy? Actually not complaining, kinka cool though cumbersome.
Little-known fact: the nine-disc boxed set for the Alien Quadrilogy is the same length as the Nostromo.
So what's everyone's take on NON-ANAMORPHIC releases? seems to be the norm now on DVD.

A tad cumbersome and unnecessary but kinda cool in a way too. I have a couple of Death albums like that. Personally I'd prefer if it was more like a "normal" digipak though.

How many bought AVATAR (Not me) and will head explode when the extended version comes out?
The Extended Collector's Edition with three discs is now out, anyone buying this?

EDIT
Round three happens in December for a Panasonic 3D Exclusive and then at the end of January for regular Retail. Come on, how many times is Cameron going to try to suck money out of the consumer! :x

Image

Not a 3D fan so I picked up this one Today. Yeah I know the movie story sucks, but as in the first Transformers movie a great special effects wow factor to soak in for a couple of hours.

EDIT 2
Mini technical review of the discs and Anamorphic Issues.
All three discs are held by a cardboard slide out pop up book style. I guess in keeping with the Enviromental concept. A scratch is one edge of the data side of the 1st disc. A flaw in the packaging? Exchanged replacement was fine. Cardboard sleeves not as bad as Eco cases, but I still like the regular solid non brittle plastic DVD cases.

Three versions of the movie are seamlessly spread out on the first two discs. Part one of all three versions is on disc one. Part two of all three versions is on disc two. Third disc has all the Special Features. A good indicator of less video compression for a better quality picture.

Image

Anamorphic Screen Fill vs Zooming the Pic
The best thing is the movie is Anamorphic! :D
On my 4:3 HD CRT the widescreen is expanded, filling up the entire screen!

Non-Anamorphic downgrades the video capabilities of a DVD. On 4:3 screen large black bars on top and bottom. Even worse on a widescreen TV you still have black bars on the top and bottom and sometimes the sides. You can zoom in the image, but at the cost of losing the resolution.

A marketing push to customers of Plasmas, LEDs and LCDs into buying the BluRay version?
:x

For future reference, a more in depth post is in my CRT vs LCD signature link.

I hope not.

Transformers actually had other redeeming factors, imo.

This seems like a horrible idea. The last thing I want to do during a movie (aside from being forced to hide from an intruder) is to go put in another disc, wait for it to load, then start the next part.
