Damn straight. Spaceballs got it right with having a dual-sided DVD with one side WS and the other FS.HellHammer wrote: Also, DVDs made specifically for either widescreen or letterbox drive me insane. Please just put both in the same box. Please?
Something not mentioned here that pisses me off is copy protection on a DVD. I like to rip my DVDs to my HTPC so I don't have to get up and look for a disc. (Boxee's pretty cool, too.) An example of this is The Simpsons Movie on DVD. I bought it, tried to rip it several times and each time I got a gray screen in the middle of the movie with the Fox intro music playing. I drove me fucking nuts. I eventually went on the Handbrake forums only to get laughed at. Why was I being laughed at? The solution was that the DVD had two tracks for the film, one being purposely corrupted. All I had to do was select the second track. I just love copy protection that gimps my product. /rant
Back on topic, I usually don't care about multiple editions unless a different apsect ratio or a shitty box is involved. Like CRT, I hate those eco-packages. Everytime I get one, I replace it with a regular DVD case from Wal-Mart. I'm not kidding. I also hate boxed sets. They look like shit, get easily torn up/crinkled, and really fuck with my obsession to keep my media looking uniform. They're just as bad as CD Digipaks. The first four 24 boxed sets are the worst examples of this in my possession. They hold 6-7 discs, but take up more room than three standard DVD cases. Utter ridiculousness. You know how much room Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. Season Two (5 discs) takes up? Approximately the same room as a standard DVD case. If you look reeeealy closely, you can see it takes up a little bit more room. This is what all Season DVDs need to do. They look nicer, don't stick out like a white guy in a soul-food restaurant, and are much more resistant to wear and tear. Well, at least Fox made up for it with Season Seven being in a case like Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. Season 2. The worst kinds of boxed sets are the ones that only hold one or two discs. I'm looking at you X-Men 3 and Ghostbusters 1 & 2.
The only exception are The Simpsons Season DVD boxed sets. I have the first five seasons and love them. They're sturdy, uniform, have cool designs inside, shit, they even come with a letter from Matt Groening. Too bad it was thrown out the window with Season Six. Seriously, what the hell am I supposed to do with this round box? I know there's a regular boxed version, but I haven't been able to find it outside of teh intarwebz.
To steer this back on topic, I get infuriated when there's an edition of a movie with something I'm interested in (ie. alternate ending, deleted footage, interviews, etc.) and it's in one of the things I mentioned above.
...I hate DVDs.
