Ill second that, but only the real Nintendo 64 version. I have no appreciation for a game that is done on high tech equipment, and on top of the emulation for some reason is never perfect.

I nomiate Space Megaforce (Super Aleste) simply because I've been playing (again) it a lot lately.

Also, not that I don't like the thread and perhaps because I have a raging migrane but, doesn't the topic of retro game of the year seem a little odd to anyone else?
However, I'm actually excited because I might discover something new in this thread~ :wink:

Is that game on the VC now?
As for the topic, this is my third year of doing it :)
(but the first time I have done nominations and voting)

Mountain of Faith - Shanghai Alice/Touhou.
The Touhou games are the donmaku shooters that I talk about all the time. Here is a video of the gameplay, keep in mind they were completely made by one guy:

Atleast watch 1:36 to 1:50 - it is alot prettier when it hasnt been compressed.

The demo can be downloaded from a lot of places but Pireze, a fellow Touhou enthusiast, has it on his site:

I forgot to mention the Red Star. That game is fantastic old school fun.

I'll second FF Tactics. Haven't played the PSP re-release, but the original game is very solid.

@DDD:
It might seem counter-intuitive, but I think it's a great idea. With XBLA, PSN, VC and two strong handheld devices all out there now, old-school gameplay is kind of coming back in a lot of ways. There's a lot of remakes and re-releases but lots of good new stuff, too.
