Doesn't gravity work vertically as well?

It seems that over time a vertical alignment might place wear and tear on the prongs holding a disc, no? What's the danger in a horizontal alignment?

My dad has CD's bought in the early 80's stored horizontally , not one has exploded yet after almost 30 years

I think CDs will be mostly ok since they're smaller and weigh less but this is a carryover from vinyl storage. Storing records flat is bad because it puts pressure on the grooves as well as any lumps and the thicker spine side of the sleeve will add to the chance of warping. Storing them vertically is better for them.

One reason is that the disk can become uneven and the other reason is that your inserts can get majorly damaged, especially if they are near the bottom of the pile due to weight. Open one of your dvd cases sometime and look at where the insert is inserted. There are grooves where the cd is on the back, and where the manual is inserted. Over time if left horizontal it can leave indents on your precious inserts because it will push against it due to gravity.


Look at these eco friendly cases. These will damage your inserts even more so then regular dvd cases if left horizontal.
