These were Sony's ultra black level sets, the XBR stood for "Xtreme/Xtended Black Retention" (It was changed to Xtended circa late 90's) These sets still boast the highest contrast ratios ever found on a consumer television set and were only rivaled in quality by the Pioneer Kuro plasma series nearly a decade later.
If you ever see an FD-Wega-XBR (all in one set and marked as such on the top left corner) buy it. The FD-Wega-XBR sets were the completely flat screened, enhanced feature set, extreme contrast version of the Trinitron and were the best of the best and Sony's highest end model available to the consumer market.
