Any recommendations for an all around gaming tv

I have a trinitron xbr. Sweet. I didn't even know I had the best. It came with our old house and it is indeed awesome. It's 32" which I think is about as big as crt sets ever came. It has a crapload of inputs and big speakers attached to the sides.

These were Sony's ultra black level sets, the XBR stood for "Xtreme/Xtended Black Retention" (It was changed to Xtended circa late 90's) These sets still boast the highest contrast ratios ever found on a consumer television set and were only rivaled in quality by the Pioneer Kuro plasma series nearly a decade later.

If you ever see an FD-Wega-XBR (all in one set and marked as such on the top left corner) buy it. The FD-Wega-XBR sets were the completely flat screened, enhanced feature set, extreme contrast version of the Trinitron and were the best of the best and Sony's highest end model available to the consumer market.

Also 40-42 inches was the largest size ever manufactured in direct tube view configuration and they were real monsters size-wise:

I can't imagine a 42" version of this thing. It takes 2 and a half people just to lift it. I'm pretty sure the stand it's on came with it, unfortunately it's kinda ugly and in crap condition but I've had no luck finding another stand that could support this thing. All the tv stands they make today are meant to hold 50 pound flat screens not 300 pound cubes.

Man I've been drooling over these things ever since I first heard of them. I'd absolutely love to get one someday, I plan on eventually replacing my current CRT with one of them. I suppose I really should be keeping my eyes open at flea markets, garage sales, goodwills, and pawn shops for these.

Currently my only HD console is a ps3, and I'm perfectly content with having games on it down-scaled if it means having the best possible picture for everything else I own. (I just plain don't like the whole multiple TV idea, plus I don't think I'd have the room to do that.)

Indeed, I have Sony KV-32HS500 and very happy. Yes its a 4:3 but is perfect for Retro. Widescreen movies take a hit. A work around is setting DVD player to widescreen, anamorphic pics then fill up the screen estate, though in a squeeze effect.
I'll take skinny actors over stretched Retro fat streetfighters though.

Yeah I don't mind letter-boxing all that much for wide-screen, and I have way more 4:3 stuff than 16:9 stuff so it's a no-brainer.

Of course I doubt I'd turn down one of those HD WEGAs if I found one for a good price. Yeah it'd mean no lightgun stuff but I don't have any lightgun stuff anyway.

You'd be surprised, Wal-Mart actually sells this nice black lacquered stand that's made of solid wood with metal posts on each end and has a really nice glass shelf in the center that can support up to 350lbs.

Personally I use it to hold up my 30 inch wide screen JVC I'ART HD-CRT that weighs 285lbs and no problems in the two years I've had it.

When you get one you'll never look back, the Trinitron IS Standard Definition CRT Display Television perfected.

The raster lines are all sharp and detailed, colors are reproduced completely accurate to the source signal input, fast moving images don't blur or have and kind of foggish aftereffect prevalent in now-aging shadow mask CRT's, provide a more accurate signal for lightguns and other screen scanning accessories and lots more thanks to their Aperture Grille Design.

Basically regular CRT's create the grid of pixels you see with a "shadow mask" (typically plastic or some other soft man-made material) which causes bleeding colors, loss of clarity and technical issues thanks to the TV relying heavily on the computer to control the screen but having lots of unknown variables come into play thanks to the unpredictable display surface.

Trinitrons on the other hand use a Steel (or on later 20'' and smaller sets Aluminum to reduce weight and strain on the casing) Aperture Grille to create the array pf pixels you see on screen. This takes a lot of the variables out of play thanks to the conductive nature of the alloy to the charged electrons coming out of the electron gun. Basically the red, green and blue pixels all find their respective pixels on screen as indicated and stay put without the need for external aid from a computer controller. Later sets beginning circa 1993-1995 began supplementing the Aperture Grilles with an integrated computer control unit alongside 3D comb filters and the existing steel panel to produce even sharper images than previously, rivaling even LCD's in clarity.

Yeah I'll look around eventually. Not buying anything til I have my own house (and gameroom) but I'm thinking I'd like a stand with a door on it so I can hide my controllers in there.

One of the best places to get dirt cheap stands in fantastic condition is also goodwill. They've always got some awesome stuff like that in the furniture section when I go in there so it should be easy for you to find one that fits your liking.
