Im no geneticist, but I'm pretty sure we are born ambidextrous, and whichever hand we use as a young child is the one we will use forever.

Also, I have a left-handed guitar; I was amazingly terrible at picking with my right hand.
However, I play hockey Canadian style, which means I am left-handed, but I use a Right-handed hockey stick.

Thank you to the guy who is left handed but plays a right handed guitar. Left handed guitars just should NOT exist at all. You don't get fucking left handed violins etc. No reason at all for a lefty to play a left handed guitar. They're at a fucking advantage to start with if they play a proper guitar. Higher left hand dexterity is a massive bonus to learning an instrument where all the work is done in your left hand to begin with. Learning to pick is something both left and right handed guitarists have to learn, you don't have an advantage being right handed as far as picking goes. It's the same learning curve.

I am a left handed drummer who started righty, as soon as my teaher realizsed i was a lefty and switched and played much, much better. The same thing, i would imagine, goes for guitar. If you are left hand dominent, you are going to want to pick with your left hand naturally. Sure you COULD learn it the other way, but from my own experience from playing righty drums at the beginning and switching (after playing marching snare for a few years right handed, and kit for about 8 weeks) the difference for me was big time. I was playing a lot better, staying in time better, more accurate hits, etc. I think it really depends on the person too.

And surprizingly enough, i play guitar right handed, heh.

There aren't left handed real instruments (like violin or woodwinds) so there shouldn't be left handed guitar. The only reason they exist is because every little queer wants to play guitar, and only real people want to play violin or woodwinds.

there must be very few real people in the world then. I wonder when the aliens took over. Probably around the time the pyramids were built.

Also, fail on the lack of left handed violins.

not to mention the fact that on woodwinds (and pianos and similar insturments for that matter), the hands are doing the same thing, neither of them are regulated to a specific purpose (i.e., fretting on a guitar). There's no reason for left handed versions to exist.

Forcing someone to overcome a large learning roadblock just because it's the "correct" way to do it (despite the fact that the end result would be EXACTLY the same) is well, stupid.

That's not entirely true for woodwinds, as they require you to have one hand above the other to hit the appropriate valves. That may or may not affect someone to have their non-dominant hand above the dominant hand.

even if that were the case, how on earth WOULD you make a left handed version of that anyhow?

They can just flip the positions of their hands if needed.

You'd have to change the positions of all the levers on all the valves. It'd be nontrivial but you should be able to pull it off without affecting the sound, as most of it is to be able to open channels out of reach of the main row.
