I always assumed the polar bears were brought by the Dharma Initiative as part of their experiments with electromagnetism since polar bears at the poles of the earth where there are unique electromagnetic properties, which is why your compass points North. That still doesn't make much sense and is never elaborated on in the show, but it was enough to get me to stop thinking about the polar bears and try to grapple whatever other confusing bit of info the show tossed at me.

Or it could mean that the island is part of the Vile Vortices and that the polar bears show up on the island at random because of it. See this thing that is often dismissed, gives credence to one of the theories about the island.

The polar bears were on the island to move the island.

The location of the big wheel that Ben moved (that moved the island) was freezing. The wheel was also large and required a lot of strength to move. In Tunisia, Charlotte found polar bear bones with a Dharma Initiative tag near it. Tunisia is the location to where Ben teleported after moving the island.

i think the whole polar bear mess MIGHT because of walt.

if you remember during a flashback in the first season he was looking at something, i think a comic. and i think on the cover was a picture of a bird, and a bird soon afterwards flew into their apartment window and died.

the comic he had with him when he was on the island had a polar bear on the cover. maybe he can "think" things to appear? maybe? maybe not. i don't know. and walt was "special" according to the others. did we ever learn why he was special? i totally forget if that was covered or not.

and the DI was there years and years prior to the plan crashing. so could a polar bear survive in that jungle for all those years? that is why i think he "thought" of a polar bear and it just materialized.
if you took a shit, please put it back

excuse me for not connecting some 2 min scene from the year 2009 answering a question that was brought up in 2004 in a 5 min scene.

if I forget its not my fault they built the show in such a way, they hint the answer 3 -4 years later

The polar bears were there for the same reason the rabbits were, to do test on. Dharma brought them there.

This video nicely sums up the remaining questions people still have about LOST:

A friend of mine had a funny analogy for LOST. She said to me "It feels like one of those stories where one person writes a line, then passes the paper onto the next person, who writes another line, who passes it again, etc, etc....like no one ever really knew where it was headed, ya know??" :P

Well the writers did vary from one episode from the next (look at the credits). However, they did have a more broad story to follow and had head writers supervising.
