If I want to add some interesting ones that aren't in people's lists yet and also are not your typical military/space marine games, I would say...

Zeno Clash (PC/Xbox Live)
Vampire: The Masquerade- Bloodlines (PC)
Peter Jackson's King Kong (multiplatform)
Dark Watch (which was mentioned earlier, but is great fun) (PS2, Xbox)
Aliens VS Predator (2000, PC)
Prey (Multiplatform)
No On Lives Forever (PC)

No one lives forever :)...forgot that game existed.

I like the FPS genre but this is like a genre where nothing really stands out for me. I remembered Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory being especially good though.

Also, at least one version of Doom can be played on nearly everything. If you want to try it on modern consoles, I'm pretty sure it's been put up on either Xbox Live or PSN. If you're at all interested in the history of FPS, I'd say you should definitely play it.

As for that list of PC titles I mentioned, certain ones do have console ports or have sequels on consoles. The new Wolfenstein saw a console port, and there are many Call of Duty and Medal of Honor games going back to the PS1.

I've also played Call of Juarez for PC. It's interesting and I enjoyed the experience, but there was more exploration than I was expecting and less gun combat. The preacher's levels are more FPS, the boy's levels are more exploratory...though I did enjoy bow-hunting rabbits.

And while I'll admit I prefer my FPS on my PC, it certainly appears we're getting away from that. And I couldn't come up with a top 10, I've played too many.
Yeah. The F.E.A.R. games are on my Want List. And I have the first Bioshock but haven't played it yet. I've got a few other games to finish up before I start that one.

I wouldn't put Deus Ex on a list with best FPS games. It's so much more than that.

If I did put it on my list though, it would be number 1. So my list:

1)Half Life 2 + episodes
2)Team Fortress 2
3)Unreal Tournament 2004 (infinite number of fun mods)
4)Unreal Tournament
5)Half Life
6)Red Faction (geomod ftw in multiplayer :D)
7)Battlefield 1943

and.... that's about it. I don't think the genre has that many modern classics, and don't even get me started on replenishing health, respawning enemies and modern wars (boring, I want to either kill aliens, monsters, or Hitler (well you can count him as monster as well I guess)

I only have one problem with first-person shooters: I can't see my character!

anybody else play it?

I was enjoying it till I got stuck at trying to escape the facility. I'm supposed to get through a room that has three of the super soldier guys in it. I couldn't figure out what to do, so they just corner me and beat me to death.

I completed Breakdown about a week or two ago. I believe there's a lot of potential for a sequel, but as it is Breakdown is a good but highly flawed game.

Mr.(-_-), look up in the elevator.
I got stuck on that part too.

Anyhow, personally I'm not much of a fan of FPS games. Off the top of my head, I think the most fun I've had with an FPS game is Modern Warfare, and Call of Duty 2 was great too.
Oh yes, I had an awesome time with Turok 2 - until the save file corrupted.
I remember Wolfenstein fondly, but it's been years since I played it so I don't remember much about it.

10. Doom 2
9. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
8. Call of Duty 2
7. Halo 2
6. Half Life 2: Episode 2
5. Halo: Combat Evolved
4. Far Cry
3. Half Life
2. Half Life 2
1. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

I didn't include Deus Ex, because I don't know if it counts as a FPS. If it does count, it goes in position 5.

Games that instantly come to mind are: Timesplitters 3, Duke Nukem 3D, Doom, Power Slave, those old FPS Star Wars games, Perfect Dark, Metroid Prime, the FPS segments in Banjo-Tooie, Gary's Mod, Oblivion, Star Wars Battlefront (only the first one), and sometimes Halo 3.

However, I'll play just about anything at a LAN party!

It'd be hard to make a list.
Because, like are we just lumping any game that is in first person and is a shooter?
I suppose you could divided FPS in to two main categories. Doom fps or halo fps. (I am just using the most well know for example) But what about games like borderlands, is that an fps too?
