I think they had a solid plot at the beginning, but about halfway through Season 3 they just started making things up and are now throwing it all back together.

Its kinda like before they made Empire Strikes Back, Lucas wanted Vader to be a robot...

You consider these answers?

Q: What the hell is that smoke monster?
A: Jacob's mystical brother.
Q: How did he become a smoke monster then?
A: Jacob put him in a cave of light.
Q: Seriously, what the fuck?

I think its ok...at least things are happening and the show is not over yet...
After time travel and smoke monster being a fact not hallucination ,
we can have answers but no one gets upset if its complete fantasy...

expect something like the black-dressed guy is the devil, and Jacob is an Angel that was exiled from heaven, the island is the missing piece of land connecting heaven and earth, those who are dead are held there, so the whole crew was dead all along....then Jacob will hug the Man in black and dive into hell, and that was the bomb of Hiroshima

jacob's brother could be the smoke monster. that is one possibility.

but b/c he was thrown into the "light," disappears, and out comes the smoke monster you are assuming brother IS the smoke monster. how do you know that the dead body didn't "wake" up the smoke monster? point i am trying to make, i don't think it is 100% positive brother = smoke monster.
if you took a shit, please put it back

and it is similar to when doc in the first season kept on "seeing" his father. turns out, a few episodes ago we learn it was "locke" taking on father's body form. its like they are just randomly writing bits and pieces into the story so people can say, "look!! they are making connections back to season 1!"
Ah yes, thank you. I was hoping you would say that about "Adam and Eve". Don't you see that you are simply accepting what was WRITTEN for a CHARACTER on the show to say, simply because it happened first(season one)? You realize movies and books use this same misdirection, but because you are holding the book in your hand or watching the movie from start to finish, you can verify that the writers haven't "pulled a fast one" on you. I'm telling you that THESE writers have done this as well. ABC has an employee for LOST whose sole responsibility has been to keep the show's "bible"; to keep the details straight. How successful he is may be debateable, but it shows the writers' foreknowledge of how complex the story would be...and how connections would eventually be made. Now you look back at it as random? So you don't want any connections made? Christian really isn't dead for you? That's a better explanation for you in the context of this story? - That Jack's dead father in a coffin came back to life? To serve what purpose, story-wise?

Back to your specific comments...Jack, a doctor(not an archaeologist), GUESSING about clothing decomposition, on an island with mystical properties(including time-displacement)...? Doesn't seem that trustworthy of analysis.

And for the record, I believe they are MUCH older than you claim. Probably 2000-3000 years. If we witnessed the birth of Smokey, the Egyptians came to the island apparently after this point, building the temple(showing Smokey and Anubis)and Tawaret.

final fight cd wrote: and the reason why everybody is "bitching" is because no answers are being resolved. yeah, we learn stuff here and there, but it is nothing major. people want to know the REAL answers. why were THEY picked, who is the smoke monster, who is LOCKE. this is just scratching the surface. the list can go on and on. here we are with 2 episodes left and they are still introducing new characters and new elements to the mystery.

i can tell you like the series. i like it to. but common, you have to admit it is flawed and overly dragged out.
You're making two different arguments now. They are answering things and are making connections. That is the point I am making, however, you are absolutely right that they are not the MAIN mysteries.

And at this point, no, I don't like the series. I am heavily invested, but I feel that, while the writers may have known the basic facts and general direction they were heading, there is simply not enough MEAT to this story to sustain even six seasons. I am expecting an extremely simple explanation, and unsatisfying conclusion.

To reiterate, I agree completely. Flawed and dragged out.

Oh, and flash-sideways caused by detonating an A-bomb??? Dumbest idea ever.

They are answers(more like details), but I never said I was satisfied by them. This is a mystery show. If they told you EXACTLY what Smokey was, at any point, there would be nothing more. I sympathize, like I said, in that I agree that this show doesn't have ENOUGH of those main mysteries to sustain six seasons, so they have to dole out little bits. There's really only one mystery. What is the island? Everything else piggybacks off that, and we're not gonna get that answer until probably the last five minutes of the show...

i was gonna say a few thousand years old, but they had metal knives. when did metal knives come into existence? but whatever, its a minute point. hundred or thousand, they are old.

like you, i am in "invested" in thes series. almost 6 seasons invested. looking back to season 1 and where it has evolved is crazy. it really isn't the same show anymore.

i didn't know about the show's "bible keep."

i forget where i read this, but i am pretty sure 1 or 2 seasons ago the writers said the finale was going to be amazing. and that is what i am banking on. i have high, very high hopes for the finale to blow me away. and anything less i will be dissapointed.

Is anyone else consistently amazed but how brutally and often surprisingly Lost kills its characters? I mean bashing a woman's head in with a rock right after she gives birth to two kids, Alex's execution in front of Ben, the brutal beat down of Mr. Eko by Smokey, people getting randomly blown up, Nikki and Paulo getting buried alive, I could go on and on.

No show kills people off like Lost does. Deaths are often brutal, and many times we don't see them coming. When Lost does go for the traditional melodramatic, sad music playing, you know it's coming death though, it does that well. Like Charlie's death or Sun and Jin.
