It could one or more of these factors or some other one: not enough return on the investment, not enough demand, too costly from a design/test viewpoint, etc. GB/GBC is old hardware/technology and it's not easy to support. In the previous generation, the gamecube wasn't top selling so they probably brought out the player as another angle to increase console/hardware sales. For this generation, the Wii/DS are on the top of the heap.
It would be fitting if they were to come out with a Wii DS Player. The wiimote could function like the stylus.
