A question to the original poster, what elements are you looking for, such as theme, game-play, storyline, character designs... I mean there are more than plenty of RPGs for the system that you have listed.

What games have you played?

The most obvious ones are definitely the Final Fantasy series, mostly on the Play Station family, from VII to XII, plus Tactics, they do have a good storyline at least, but each gameplay defers from one-to-one.

Square Enix is the king of JRPG (at least in property rights) with Dragon Quest, as well as the Chrono series, and Tactics Ogre. Stand alone series like Xenosaga and Parasite Eve are good as well.

Namco Bandai's Tales series are also good.

There's good article on JRPG on Gamasutra (a must-visit site for potential game designers!):

All the Dragon Quest games. They're much better than Final Fantasy IMO.

Careful what you wish for AgentCupcakes, the number of notable rpgs on those systems you mentioned could keep you locked up in a house for a very, very long time. The PS1 and PS2 alone have such a massive library of rpgs.

I think the rpg genre would probably be the best genre of games to have if I ever got stuck on a deserted island. Maybe I'd actually have the time then to max out every character in a Disgaea game LOL

Awesome, List Time.

Wii

Super Paper Mario - Action RPG, great humor.

Gamecube

Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door - Turn-based with timed-button press mechanic, great story, a lot of fun.

N64

Paper Mario - The original and my favourite of the series.

Genesis

Phantasy Star IV - The only RPG I've played on the system, pretty impressive for the time, great story, nice plot twists, battles can get tedious.

PS2

Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria - Gorgeous 2.5D graphics, tactical/action style battles, it's hard to describe. Interesting story, try to find the UNDUBBED version if you're using Swapmagic/HDD, the US voices can be a lttle rough.

PSX

Chrono Cross, Front Mission 3 and Vagrant Story were my favourites.

Shin Megami Tensei (SF) you would need an emu for the translation. Weird game, dungeon crawler but I like it.
Thanks everyone...

Mana Khemia 1 and 2. I just loved these two games for some reason.

If you're a fan of Atlus, you might like Odin Sphere on the PS2 and Muramasa on the Wii

Aside from the obvious must-play FFs, DQs, and Chrono Cross...

I recommend Thousand Arms for the PS1 (by Atlus). The battle system is somewhat unusual; your main character is a blacksmith and can improve his own equipment but you have to go on these "dates" with the female characters to earn upgrades. It has an anime art style and lots of decent voice acting.

Also, if you're interested in somewhat of a horror-genre story, check out the original Shadow Hearts for the PS2.
