Only because those two series are so overrated. Streets of Rage especially. People always talk about that series like they are the best beat'em ups ever and Streets of Rage 2 is the best beat'em up ever made. I respect the place both SOR and Final Fight have in beat'em up history, but if I made a best of beat'em ups list, neither series would even be on it. Neither would any Double Dragon game, though again, that series has its place in history, but not every classic stands up to the test of time
i respect your own opinion for your own beat em up top list and i wouldn't try to change your mind either. everybody's top list is different. so what is the number one beat em up on your list then? or you can give me your top three.
You know, I had to really think about that for a while. If we stick to just 2-d beat'em ups...
Sengoku 3 is one I am really impressed by. I never actually finished it, but I love the graphics, the fantastic combo system, the magic attacks. More skilled players than I can pull off some impressive stuff in this game.
Capcom has a number of quality ones that are hard to choose from, but I think D&D: Shadow over Mystara and Battle Circuit represent some of their best work. So it's tough to choose between them
Ninja Warriors Again is a personal favorite of mine. I love it for not playing by any beat'em up genre rules. Instead of giving you a crappy little life bar that will be gone after just a few attacks and a bunch of extra lives to burn through, you get one long life bar and no extra lives. Unlike a lot of beat'em ups, you can block attacks in Ninja Warriors Again. I also love that Ninja Warriors Again gives you a screen clearing attack that DOESN'T use up your health, but it's not always available so you got to know when to use it. Also, Ninja Warriors Again has three distinct characters who all play COMPLETELY differently. It's a very balanced, polished, well put together game and it has a good soundtrack too. And it has other cool little touches, like picking up large objects like motorcycles and throwing them at your enemies, or flipping through the air as a helicopter flies by razing the ground with gun fire. The dramatic slow mo as you get the last hit on a boss is another nice touch. Awesome, awesome game. Too bad they removed the female ninja enemies from the US version.
I have to throw in a mention for TMNT IV on the S-NES. It's an easy game, but it's got a decent selection of moves, great use of mode 7 effects, some original attacks(like the ground slam or tossing your enemy towards the player), and quite frankly, when you look at all the little additions and improvements Konami made over the arcade version, it is one of the best arcade ports ever made, actually surpassing the original in my opinion
