Gamespot always goes a little harder on reviews and they seem to be more grounded because of that. Remember the 8.8 for Twilight Princess? The Internets freaked. But I spent 65 hours in that game and beat it, and I'd say it's a high 8 or a solid 9. It's going to be interesting to see the Halo reviews, I think. The MS embargo ends at noon Pacific time today, so I bet at least a dozen major sites will have posted stuff by this evening.
Hey thanks for that GS reviews link btw. I've never looked at their top overall scores. It's interesting how Chrono Cross is one of just four games to get a 10. I've never played it. I never owned C Trigger, but went through it with a friend back in the day. I need to get both of those games for my collection.

No way in hell is Cross a 10, but no game is a 10 in my memory. Cross is still fantastic. Too bad the Chrono fanbase were too stubborn to give it a chance.RadarScope1 wrote:Hey thanks for that GS reviews link btw. I've never looked at their top overall scores. Video game critics are like the opposite of movie critics. Where movie critics LOVE to bash popular movies(just look at the average review score percentage of any summer blockbuster), most video game critics don't have the balls to ever bash a popular and hyped up franchise, unless it has GLARING flaws that they HAVE to acknowledge.
There are certain "upper class" franchises in gaming that are practically guaranteed high scores all the time. Zelda, Halo, Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, any Nintendo first party title, etc. These games are like gaming royalty it seems. Very few movie franchises are that untouchable though. Just look at the mixed reviews on Spider-man 3 and Shrek 3.
It's just an odd thing I've noticed. It is so easy to predict review scores for games, but not so much for movies, tv shows or music. It's sort of sad how predictable game reviewers are, like there is this hive like sameness to them all. Of course, I'm referring more to the bigger, more well known sites and magazines. You can usually get more honest opinions on smaller sites or forums

Wow, have you seen the IGN video review. It's the stupidest thing I've ever seen. The video starts up like you're about to watch some kind of movie. You hear some dramatic music playing as the screen slowly brings "IGN Entertainment presents. The Halo 3 video review"
What the hell?
Do I need to buy tickets just to watch a video review now?
Oh, and according to those morons, Halo 3 is the most highly anticipated video game OF ALL TIME
Their site just continues to lose credibility with every passing month.
This is why some people hate Halo, because of idiots like this who make it out to be the second coming of Jesus. It's just a game

One interesting thing about the video though, the guy says that Halo 3 has pretty much the exact same flaws as Halo 2. The campaign mode is crap AGAIN, with a lousy story, and the usual problems with too much backtracking and bad ally AI. He even points out that Halo 1 is the only one in the franchise so far that had a good campaign mode. So, just like Halo 2, this is pretty much a multi-player game. Bungie is just all about the dollar signs now. Lazy f***s
I think I'll pass on Halo 3. I gave away my copy of Halo 2 to a friend months ago, and it looks like Halo 1 is the only game in the franchise that will ever hold a place in my library. It's been all downhill from there

I really believe this is a symptom of the medium. Game reviews read like product reviews in a lot of ways. And there's a reason for that. Games are essentially made up of systems, and they either work or they don't. Some types of systems (genres) appeal to different types of players, but for the most part the medium is not subjective like music or movies. They don't have anything much to say. They either work like they're supposed to, or they don't. And pretty much everyone can tell when they do or don't.Gamerforlife wrote:Video game critics are like the opposite of movie critics. I've got a good bit of cautious optimism about Halo 3. I enjoyed going through both Halo 1 and 2 and relish the chance to shoot more aliens. That being said I have no plans to purchase Halo 3 or a 360 any time soon.
Luckily, lots of people I know are planning to pick it up so I can play for free.
Even better is that one of my friends will probably buy a 360 this week just to play it and has pledged to give his original Xbox to me. So unless Bungie produces a total lemon I don't see how I can lose.

Unfortunately both are idiots. I don't really know what's worse. Buy an average game based on a great score or miss a good movie because some stupid critic thinks bashing films "just because" makes him more credible or something...Gamerforlife wrote:Video game critics are like the opposite of movie critics.
