Geez, always so much Halo hate around here. I loved the original Halo. It was an excellent game. The Covenant were very entertaining, the controls were good, great music, some fun weapons(like the needler and plasma grenade), quality voice acting, good challenge(on Legendary difficulty), fun vehicles, and the marines were funny. Riding around in an armored tank with a huge cannon and mounted gun, plus a couple of trash talking marines with sniper rifles sitting on the outside=good times. I don't know why the first game gets put down so much here. If anyone actually played it for more than a few minutes, they might be surprised how much fun it is. The multi-player wasn't really my thing, but it was fun and pretty balanced.
Halo 2 let me down though. In all honestly, I can't say it was a bad game. I just was mad with some of the things Bungie did. They had this awesome demo level they showed that never actually made it into the game. The didn't even finish the campaign mode, which pissed me off. The focus was too much on the multi-player aspect. And even that had its problems. Enough that they had to actually release updates to change the multi-player mechanics. I didn't like the story either. I have no idea why they made a Covenant character playable. I don't want to BE the Covenant. I want to FIGHT the Covenant. It's just more fun that way.
I'm interested in how Halo 3 will turn out, but what I've seen so far doesn't scream "next gen" to me. Although really NOTHING I've seen since the launch of the big three actually does. However, this is Halo 3. THE biggest game the 360 will have this year and maybe even for years to come. It's what many people bought a 360 for. This is the game that SHOULD blow us all away. What really bothers me is that practically every online video is showcasing the multi-player leading me to believe that Bungie is once again half-assing the campaign mode, which is the only part of the game I actually care about.
I believe the original Halo was designed primarily as a single player experience, but today everyone is obsessed with this damn online, multi-player crap. Ugh. I play games mostly for escapism not competition.
Halo 3 and You
I've preordered. At EB you can trade in 3 games worth just $8 or more and you get the thing for free! I have tons of used games lying around so it basically costs me nothing.
I had a ton of fun playing Halo 1 and 2 multiplayer (though Halo 2 screwed up the MP formula pretty bad). Its very far from the best FPS shooter around, but the choices on consoles are limited. Console FPS are great because you can bring them to a friend's easily and have some fun drinking beers, trash-talking - all without the 'LAN-party' vibe which IMO is lame.
So I'm really looking forward to Halo 3, bringing my 360 to a friends and having a great time - perhaps playing through the whole game in co-op.

This is my problem. I'm not hating, just saying I've been into it. BUT now with a 360 I'll go back and play through the first game. I've heard the same thin you said: first one was great, second one was a let down somewhat.Gamerforlife wrote:If anyone actually played it for more than a few minutes, they might be surprised how much fun it is.
So does it count as retro if I got through the original Halo?

Six hours spread out over TWO games over the course of seven years. I think you just proved my point. You haven't really put much time into either one of them.Mozgus wrote:I've tried 1 and 2 for a combined total of maybe 6 hours since 2001. That's more than a few minutes. But to each his own, like any massively successful game franchise, Halo has its critics. I don't fall into either camp since I loved the first one, but didn't like the second one. My opinion on the third one is rather neutral until I get a chance to rent it(if I can even get my hands on a copy)
6 hours! 6 hours is TOO much time spent on a game with such elementary depth. There's nothing I don't understand about Halo. I've played this shit before. It's generic. Why should I waste more time on it? Explain how it will magically get better.Gamerforlife wrote:Six hours spread out over TWO games over the course of seven years. I think you just proved my point. A bit off topic but - speaking of critics, I have a feeling that reviewers are going to be giving this game a LOT of perfect scores. Way more than BioShock. They're going to cite the depth of both the campaign and multiplayer modes, and say it's one of the deepest games ever created. (Not saying that's my opinion, just guessing what others will say.)
I'm willing to bet that by the time all the reviews come in, Halo 3 is going to be in the top 3 or 4 spots all time on Game Rankings. THEN you'll get even more people saying its overrated.

Can you blame them? Anytime a site gives a review of a super popular game more than 10% below the critic average, they get slammed and flamed and lose a small portion of their viewer base. Gamespot occasionally has the balls to do this anyway, and for that I have an amount of respect for them. But then again, their scores indicate that Tony Hawk 3 is the best game ever made...RadarScope1 wrote:A bit off topic but - speaking of critics, I have a feeling that reviewers are going to be giving this game a LOT of perfect scores.
