An unexpected expense just came up, and I have a number of expenses in my immediate future so I'll have to make a decision based on my budget for the moment. The RGB to Component converter looks like an interesting (and quite possibly the best) solution, but it also looks like a summer project.
I hate all that Flash Bloat. Too much hassles just to view pics. (CLICK the Product Slideshow)

When you go for it, please give us updates, some soldering required to adapt a Saturn cable to JROK board.

UHHHH ... Yeah, I think I'm going to go for the Upscan Converter for now. Anything that involves "soldering" is pretty much outside of my arena. If the Upscan Converter doesn't solve the problem to a tolerable level, I'll sell it on ebay and try to figure out the JROK thing in July or something as a summer project.

I don't want it to seem like I'm not accepting your advice, becuase you've provided me with some very valuable information but anything that involves taking up soldering for the sake of a Sega Saturn seems like a bit much for the moment.

If and when I get the Upscan Converter (will probably obtain mid April if I do), I will post pics of how it goes. If it doesn't work, the saga will continue with the RGB device here as well.

I decided to try and "simulate" the 640x480 signal via my laptop and an emulator. I think I screwed it up by messing with the settings and ended up getting an 800x600 signal (because the 640x480 signal had turned into a 800x600 signal after messing with the visual output of my laptop; I think the 640x480 signal only existed when I didn't use my laptop screen at all). Anyways, despite not being a perfect representation of the original signal, the picture was PERFECT on the Sega Saturn game WachenRoder and it was a complete turnaround from how the game was being displayed on my LCD through Saturn's composite hookup.

This is the best way to do this.

1. Buy yourself a RGB to YUV Component Converter off ebay. its like 44.95 US + 6US shipping if your in US.

2. Get yourself a 12VDC, 300MAh, positive polarity AC Adapter. you'll need 1 because the adapter above doesn't come with a NA power supply only EUR.

3. Grab yourself a set of component cables. get some good thick cables.

4. Go on ebay and find yourself a RGB Scart Switcher. They usually come with 3-4 RGB inputs and 1 RGB output + Audio out. Grab 1 of these since the adapter above does not do audio out unless you mod the box itself. Plus if you ever decide to get other RGB compatible systems like the Mega Drive, Dreamcast, etc you'll be set. Make sure the switcher is RGB! and not composite.

5. Score yourself a Sega Saturn RGB Scart cable. Make sure it is RGB because there are alot of people selling these cables and they are composite only!

I bought mine from ChaoticJelly Games..But i don't think his site is up at the moment. But you can try here too...http://www.consolegoods.co.uk/

6. Hook it all up and enjoy. The saturn looks awesome on LCD. Especially shooters. Batsugun....Woah man. Make sure you turn down the sharpness to basically 0 since you wont need it or its going to be to blocky which is the result of playing on a LCD.

I have this setup and I can tell you it looks nice!

There are transcoders available, but they don't support NTSCJ.

You mean like a Japanese Saturn? Or do you mean using Japanese RGB cables?

Because I am using a Japanese Saturn and using EUR RGB Scart cables and everything works fine.

You can also use the Transcoder in Japan..it will work fine with the power supply i mentioned.

There is a little soldering involved, reason why I pointed it out. In all honesty not really that difficult, the hardest is getting all the right parts. The soldering is a matter of creating connectors to plug into Saturn, JROK and RCA audio input of your LCD, 8 pin-out wires total. Well, additional 2 wires and a 5 volt power source such as a small transformer plug for the JROK. RGB route is more work up front, but will provide the best pic, more cost effective vs XRGB transcoder or the cheaper Upscan option.

If the Upscanner doe not work out, maybe an electrician friend can do that soldering?

I mean a Japanese Saturn. But what transcoder are you using? The one I listed? As for a power supply, I'm sure I could find some sort of step down converter ...

I'm a little weary of the item because it doesn't support Japanese or American format NTSC. Can anyone else provide their opinion on the matter?

I guess I could do it myself for a summer project, but it's just a lot to do just for a Sega Saturn. It's really outside of my arena though, so I would have to really educate myself on it. I'm a little confused on why I would have to "create" connectors though, when it looks like it already has connections on the circuit board?

Anyways, I like the Sega Saturn, but if I can get a decent image (doesn't have to be perfect) I think I'll be okay.

What did you think of the item the person above suggested?

------

Edit: As it turns out, the two Hori Upscan Converters available on yahoo.co.jp auction are both being sold as "condition unknown" aka "as is." What a disappointment.

I found another one on this website, but the website still says copyright 2003. :s ...

But I might be able to aquire an XRGB Plus 2 ... if I can still find listings as cheap as 2700en in May.

There is no pre-made cable to go from RGB Saturn splitting off to a 5 pin rectangular connector for JROK and RCA Audio inputs of TV. Thats where the soldering comes in, not difficult, just buying the correct connectors and soldering wires up.
