yes and no. "Super Game Boy" games work, meaning Game Boy games that have color info built in (examples: Link's Awakening DX, R-Type DX, etc. They look exactly like GB carts, but are usually a different color like black.) GBC do NOT work on GB.NathanBarnatt wrote:And kinda dumb question but I dont remember if Color games worked on the original GB.Anapan wrote:You use a PC with an included program to transfer Gameboy ROM files onto them.

Black cartridge games work on original Gameboy's the clear GBC carts don't. Don't know if this applies to those flash carts though...

Well, if you have an Intel-based mac, you could get Parallels, VMWare Fusion (not as good as Parallels), or simply install Windows using Bootcamp. Picking up a copy of XP off of eBay should be pretty cheap, though you can very easily bootleg it via bittorrent as well.NathanBarnatt wrote:I have a mac. As for GB vs. GBC games, GBC games work provided they don't say "Only for Gameboy Color" as some were backwards compatible but others would only play on GBC. With homebrew stuff, though, who knows.
edit:
Niode beat me to it.

Those DX games ARE Game Boy Color games, the Super Game Boy-specific games came out prior to the GBC days. IIRC, Super Game Boy games displayed with the normal original GB palette if played on a GBC.noiseredux wrote:yes and no. I beat you both to it.17DaysOlderThanNES wrote: Niode beat me to it.
Those DX games are technically GBC games yes, but I was referring to the cart-build. They are the same size/shape as GB carts, not the fatter design of GBC carts.17DaysOlderThanNES wrote:Those DX games ARE Game Boy Color games, the Super Game Boy-specific games came out prior to the GBC days. Re: I ordered a backlit game boy
Most of the rom transferring programs have options to tell the cart whether the games on them are GBC or DMG(mono) - that will dictate how the GBC games behave on a DMG. With the EMS carts, there are 2 pages so you can put your GBC games on one side, and DMG on the other. Unless the rom you want to play is GBC only, you won't have any problems with your Backlit DMG. LSDJ is compatible with all the gameboy systems, it'll use color and the extra speed and ram if the gameboy has it, but runs just fine on DMGs aswell.
AFAIK the programs only work on PC computers. Transferring roms to the cart is quick and easy, so you could just use someone else's PC for the 3 or so minutes it'd take.

Re: I ordered a backlit game boy
I asked cause one of the carts you can get to put LSDJ on is made out of a GB color cartridge. Although they may have just used that as a case. I found a site selling the same thing and it says it works on DMG's. So nevermind and thanks.
I think I will just use my friends pc to load the program to the cartridge. But then hopefully I can dump my songs on my mac with the usb connection.

Doubtful. The driver that allows data transfer to and from the cart is only available for PC. It's not a USB mass storage device, so the PC transfer program is the only way to interface with the card right now.NathanBarnatt wrote:But then hopefully I can dump my songs on my mac with the usb connection.
The song is stored as a .SAV file, so you would probably need your friend's PC to back up the save data. The thing is the sound emulation in emulators, and even the sound output of any gameboy system other than a prosound modded gameboy is quite far off from what you'd get by playing the song back on your original DMG gameboy through the prosound line out. You lose most of the bass "warmth" by outputting the music other ways. That's why the prosound mod is so popular. It's sorta like the whole tube guitar amp thing.

Re: I ordered a backlit game boy
I got a prosound modded DMG.
I could get the songs to a PC then turn them into mp3's or something so I can get them on my mac right?
And I ordered this cart
