Just when you think you've heard of all the game systems...

Post by Perseid »

...you see this. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-CASIO-LOOPY-SYS ... dZViewItem

According to the Wikipedia it's a cartridge based system for girls that features a sticker printer. You could take snapshots of your game, add text and pictures, girlify it up and print it as a sticker. You could also buy an add on that would accept video input and let you print stickers of the video source, which you could also girlify.

This is apparently a Sega-CD era console that according to the Wikipedia was pretty cool but didn't do too well. From the same eBay seller games for this sucker are as much as $300 a piece. Not a chance. Not unless the controller has an Orgasm button.

The last thing the gaming world needed was a "girly" game system. Kind of presents a negative stereotype that I'm sure a lot of girl gamers wouldn't appreciate.

Well, in the case of this Casio machine I think the operative word was girls, not women. But I agree. The solution to the problem of games being too directed at males is not a bunch of games directed at females - it's more gender-neutral games.

Gender roles and stereotypes in Japan are very different than the rest of the world. In Japan, it's still OK to be "cute", to like "cute" things, to do things "cute", well into adult-hood. I would say this product is targeted at the teen market over there, but wouldn't be surprised to see it used by women in their late 20s.

And to stir the pot, I don't particularly see a problem with games that are targeted for men or women specifically. Different things appeal to the different genders. However, the problem is when the games are cheaply made and obviously targeting stereotypes instead of a specific gender, like the only "girl" games being pink ponies and the only "boy" games being gory FPSs.

I heard of the FM Towns Marty before, mostly because it got a port of Flashback back in the 90s

I don't know... but I never really considered those stripped down computers (the Marty) as consoles back then (i.e. the CD32)...

but then again that means the XBOX really isn't much of a console either. heh.

oooh a loopy. I had a girlfriend who had one back some years, I never did ask where she got it. It also never really worked but the they didnt actually have the right cables and that might factor in there some how. But as a family of scientist they were never wrong...yes I did get out of there fairly quickly after that.

Sorry after one relationship where I was always wrong, I could not take another. When the one you love ends up correcting you most every moment you are together, well it gets really old really fast. That and she thought FFIV was the best of the series, Im a FFI fan.

I can see the divorce papers now...

"Reason for divorce: [x] Irreconcilable differences.
Explanation: She thinks Final Fantasy IV is the best and can't acknowledge how wrong she is"

(not to make light of ended relationships, but... lol )
