the standard pad never really bothered me, but now that I have the Hori I can feel a huuuuge difference.

For me it's the shoulder buttons... just so aweful using them on the GBC for the F-Zero or Mario Kart carts, for instance. :-D

Shoulder buttons + Either the analog or tiny (oddly placed) D-Pad = Suckage

Hori digital pads are a fair bit cheaper at Yahoo Japan Auctions. I was bidding on several JA GBA carts through the proxy service FromJapan, and adding a Hori for $30-some dollars had a negligible effect on shipping.

Although I haven't tried any alternatives, I can easily say this pad is a huge improvement over GB Player'ing with the standard GC controller.
I searched FromJapan can came up empty

Got my jet black unboxed Hori Pad in the post the other day, after sniping an auction in the Netherlands (sounds painful) for $28 USD.

It's... alright, but overhyped. I like the d-pad and the shoulder buttons, but the GC button layout doesn't work quite as nicely for GBA stuff, particularly of the press-b-while-holding-a variety. Feels a bit light in the hand, although I think the slight extra depth compared to the SNES pad is probably welcome.

The GC pad and the SNES pad are probably my two favourite controllers ever, and this feels like it's neither one thing nor the other. I actually find the GC pad is better for some things with freeform cursor movement (like the map screen in Final Fantasy Tactics Advance).

But no, I won't sell it

BTW, has anyone tried Hori's earlier offering, intended to be used with the old Super Gameboy? Destructiod Article.

:( Sorry to lead you astray. I took a look and see none up at the moment, either. There is a smattering of cool Club Nintendo stuff, though. For future reference (not necessarily that you don't know this, but for all reading), here is the GC accessories category that you can page through. Some items have the English branding in the title/description, but many don't- that can make searching trickier.

Just to contradict myself, I've been using the Hori pad to play Metroid Fusion and I'm really starting to appreciate it, compared to the GBA SP controls. Shoulder buttons in particular are tonnes better.

Fusion looks beautiful via the GBA Player, insofar as that game can look beautiful (some very rubbish art design in there, IMO). Feels much more at home on a proper console, particularly given the not-particularly-portable save mechanics.

RE: toysnjoys.com

so far I'm not thrilled. I placed my order on 3/5. I got an order confirmation (ie: they took my money and gave me a receipt) that day. As of 3/15 still no shipping confirmation. I sent them two emails asking if my order had shipped. I tried to call them on 3/16, but because of the huge time zone difference between East Coast USA and Hawaii, I had a difficult time getting hold of anyone. Finally on 3/17 I got an response email from them that just said "your order has been processed and will ship soon." Not even a shipping date! Just a vague "soon." Sigh. I'd cancel the order, but what I ordered is way too awesome and too good a price.
