A 4850 will wipe the floor with a 9800GT and cost the same price. Trust me, go for a Radeon 4850 if you're even considering a 9800GT. That goes for anybody. If you don't believe me, go look up benchmarks for the Radeon 48xx and 5xxx series. Completely obliterating anything nVidia has got on market, and the best part. It costs less.
I disagree. ATI always throws driver issues, even on Linux installs. They always have to have driver updates, have crappy hardware keeping it together, take up alot of space, and consume a lot of power. Nvida supports damn near everything under the sun, and the display quality is better. Why do you think ATI costs less? Poor quality. They build them with cheaper hardware. If you don't want the hassle of having to re-tweak the settings of the card all the time, go with Nvidia.
You are clearly a fanboy making shit up. I've been using my 4870 since I bought it September 2008, and aside from a required bios update to stop the card overheating (it wasn't scaling the fans to deal with heat efficiently due to bug in the very first batches of the cards -- I bought the card within weeks of it coming out -- I fixed this by making my own xml profile for CCC which took 10 seconds to do and then later updated the BIOS when I felt like it) and Java not working consistently in Vista (vista's fault since it's a piece of shit, I upgraded to Windows 7 and the problem vanished completely). I don't see what the problem is. nVidia cards are just as big if not even bigger than the latest cards from ATi. ATi cards aren't any less efficient than the equivalent card. Those saying no games are using DX11, might want to keep up to date with the current game releases, I know that Call of Pripyat, Dirt 2, Metro 2033 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 use DX11 just off the top of my head.
I have never had to 're-tweak' the settings of my card. Never had any driver issues. Nothing. Hell, I very rarely feel the need to upgrade my drives, half the time it's by choice since I have 10 minutes to kill... No games have ever come out that have forced me to upgrade drivers.
Seriously, stop talking out of your ass. The only people supporting nVidia are fanboys. Every single buyer's guide I have read all say to buy Radeon. You'd be dumb not to, unless of course, you don't need/want to play the latest games. Then it's fine to spend £20-30 on an 8800GT that will play anything circa 3 years ago. People saying the drivers suck on ATi are just making shit up to justify their poor buying decision. They don't. Having used nVidia cards for a long time up until ATi started wiping the floor with nVidia a couple of years ago, I find the CCC much easier to use than nVidia's drivers. I have yet to have a single driver issue.
I wouldn't know about this stuff if I hadn't spent hours and hours researching my purchases. I never pull the trigger on something unless I know it offers the best bang for buck. The system I built for £500 was the best £500 I ever spent, it's still running all the latest games at 1152p on max settings 18months after I bought it.
