You heard well, horizontal is the best position precisely because it has less chance of scratching the discs.RadarScope1 wrote:OK, I actually have another silly 360 question. Does anyone know if it's better leave it in a horizontal position or stand it up vertically? I would think vert might be better for cooling and airflow, but I hear its more likely to scratch the discs that way.
A silly question for Xbox 360 owners

Yeah vertical scratched a few discs of mine. If your worried about heat you can put it on a grated shelf or something like a milk crate.NebachadnezzaR wrote:You heard well, horizontal is the best position precisely because it has less chance of scratching the discs.RadarScope1 wrote:OK, I actually have another silly 360 question. I *think* I'll be OK on the heat. I have a space already cleared in my entertainment center. It's about 14 inches wide and probably 7 inches tall. There's and inch or so of ventilation on the back (at the top) and of course the front is open.
I was thinking about setting it up an inch or so off the bottom, though. I'd still have three or four inches of clearance for the heat to rise up.

Having opened one up, I'd say that horizontal seems to be marginally better for heat dissipation. Regardless, the device is pieced together with such shoddy components, that I fail to see that any precautions you take will interfere with its rush towards death. Now, with that said, I've had mine for over a year and have had no problems with it. None except for the noise levels -- ugh.
And, for the most part, the discs can withstand heat fairly well. Hell, for whatever reason, discs in my Wii get alot hotter than things coming out of the XBOX. But someone mentioned sunlight -- direct, prolonged exposure to sun will destroy a CD -- even if you manage to keep it cool during the exposure.

This is why I will be getting Best Buy's store warranty on my Xbox. I normally would never get one with consumer electronics from a name brand, but the 360 is different. Between that and MS's three-year warranty for RRoD, I feel safe purchasing one.durkada wrote:Having opened one up, I'd say that horizontal seems to be marginally better for heat dissipation.
