A silly question for Xbox 360 owners

Post by Gamerforlife »

The complaints about the system overheating are well known. Supposedly, the extreme temperature the system reaches is bad for the system itself. My question is, what about the discs? I've noticed that I can sit and watch a movie on my PS 2 and when I'm done and I go to pull the disc out, it seems to be at normal temperature. However, if I pull a disc out of the Xbox 360 after having it in there for an hour or two, it will be very warm. Isn't constant exposure to all that heat bad for your DVDs? Forgive my ignorance.

long exposure to disc formatted entertainment will erase the data contained. Hence why my legend of dragoon game didnt work. I left it on top of my armoire in the sun because i forgot i had put it there. It was right next to my window, and back then i used to pull the curtains back all the time. And well I wanted to play it but it would just keep saying please insert a playstation or playstation 2 disc. or some shit like that. I looked online and found out that my irresponsibility fucked me over. I do not know if the xbox 360 will do this to your games or movies. But just know that the heat can really screw up your discs.

Yeah, you can say it does over long period of times. There is a glue on there that holds the reflective surface down. If that glue were to change opacity or dry out, well you'd get errors on the disk.

Not sure how hot, and for how long this would have to occur.

What I WILL say, video game consoles aren't DVD players... stop using it as one. I personally got the HD-DVD add on for the 360 just for this reason... so not to wear out my 360's DVD-rom drive, and to reduce the temperature placed on my movies (which surprisingly I treasure more then my games).

First, I agree with LordofDuct. Buy a DVD player. :)

I've never taken a hot disc out of my 360 but I never watch movies in it either. As far as the heat damaging the disc, though, probably not. If you leave a DVD out in the sun the problem is going to be that the heat is only on particular spots of the disc which is going to case things to expand disproportionately and stuff like that. If there is enough heat to destroy a DVD it's going to destroy everything else long before your disc is in danger.

Just put your xbox right in front of your AC...TRUST ME...I KNOW! Or put it in you fridge, since the wireless controllers will work through that. cuz I threw out all my mom's Jenny Craig.

Well, my 360 does the same thing, the discs (games or movies) come out like hot pancakes, but so far I think it hasn't ruined any of my DVD's. I also played Oblivion well over 100 hours, mostly for long periods of time at once, and the game still works, so...

Well, I don't really worry about the system heating up Xbox 360 games as I'd like to think that the games were built to withstand that. Plus, they are a different format(HD-DVD)than the standard DVDs that most of my movies/tv shows are on.

I actually do have a stand alone DVD player, though when I watch something there will be frequent pauses. Kind of like what happens when you play a game and it stops to load. That's why I don't use it much. I should probably buy a new player, preferably from a more well known brand.

I'm right there with you on treasuring DVD movies and such lordofduct, though I'd say I treasure them just as much as my games. I have a relatively small, but quality collection of movies and tv shows on DVD and preserving them is important to me. Especially the tv series, it's expensive getting all the seasons of a tv show you love on DVD

Thanks for the input guys

Actually, they're not. 360 games come in both regular and dual-layer DVD's, not HD-DVD.

OK, I actually have another silly 360 question. Does anyone know if it's better leave it in a horizontal position or stand it up vertically? I would think vert might be better for cooling and airflow, but I hear its more likely to scratch the discs that way.
