To me the first sonic was the only one that felt like a true platformer, with less speed and lots of slow downs and jumping. The other ones its burst of speeds and then suddenly you have to stop.

Re: I Thought Sonic Was Hold Down Right...
I played the game a little bit after college. I too don't remember ever getting past the first zone. I'm just playing it recently on the PSP (part of the Sega Genesis Collection) and I love it. The graphics/gameplay are awesome on the PSP. With my limited time, I appreciate the save states that is built into the collection. I'm somewhere around zone 4 or 5. I haven't gotten all of the emeralds but I think I will try that on my second pass.cabrando wrote:I had the impression of hold right because I never made it past Green Hill Zone. I'm not sure why I never played it past there, I guess my attention span as a kid was very short.

My favorite Sonic game is tied between Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic CD.noiseredux wrote:Sonic 2 is definitely my favorite.
Sonic and Knuckles forced you to slow down and had more platforming than the previous games.pepharytheworm wrote:To me the first sonic was the only one that felt like a true platformer, with less speed and lots of slow downs and jumping. Whoa there Mister. You should really try to get all the chaos emeralds in Sonic first.cabrando wrote:I finally got around to playing/beating the first Sonic on the Genesis.
Boy does it feel good to have played through it. I didn't get all the Chaos Emerald. I actually enjoyed this a lot more than any Mario game except SMB3.
It is definitely not about holding down right, there is some fantastic platforming in this game. I'm probably preaching to the choir here, just glad my eyes have finally been opened to Sonic.
Off to play Sonic 2...

Re: I Thought Sonic Was Hold Down Right...
Sonic tends to frustrate me every time I play it. Enemy placement can be very cheap and I find the game tends to deliberately propel me into harm's way. Sometimes I'm going so fast I can't possibly see what's ahead of me and other times it's just stuff appearing from off screen.
Re: I Thought Sonic Was Hold Down Right...
I always hated the hold right and jump argument. the first sonic games to me, are the pinnacle of the series. i couldn't understand people when they said hold right argument because i knew that the game wasn't just that. personally, i still have yet to beat the third zone of the first game. not because of boredom but because of difficulty. if the game was truly hold right and jump the whole way through, then i wouldn't have this much difficulty with the game (btw if anyone is wondering, i consider the difficulty to be a good thing and the reason a partial reason i can't beat it is because i have always sucked at platformers). has anyone knowledge that the memory of what sonic used to be has changed drastically in the eye's of the public? they no longer remember what the first games were truly like. they automatically think that all sonic was about was speed. this we all know is not true at all.

Sonic the character was about speed whereas Sonic the game was about platforming.weasels wrote:they automatically think that all sonic was about was speed. this we all know is not true at all.
Yeah man, you have to get the good ending! Don't you care about the Flickies?Luke wrote: Whoa there Mister. You should really try to get all the chaos emeralds in Sonic first.

the music in the chaos emerald bonus levels is amazing.
I always sort of forget about Sonic CD. That would be 2nd favorite, really.

Re: I Thought Sonic Was Hold Down Right...
I don't blame you, it was released on a poorly marketed bastard of a console. Half the reason it's my favorite is because of the music. Not only are there an assload of tracks for a platforming game in the early ninties, they all kick ass. (my favorite is Stardust Speedway Bad Future)noiseredux wrote: I always sort of forget about Sonic CD. That would be 2nd favorite, really.
