Fastbilly1, what about Ringworld? If Halo isn't a knock-off of Ringworld (at least in some regards) I don't know what it knocks off.

Also, to see the roots of Halo's story go back and play the Marathon games. They're not the same world, but Bungie's storytelling was it's most complex and original during the Marathon period and you can see some of it carry over.

the first halo on the pc is to be honest a fun game. a lot of people still play that dam game. halo 2 was an easy fps to get into. i use to play with mlg members and we would scrimmage (i would get my ass kicked but not too badly) and it was a fun way to pass the time.
i mean not that many games let you accurately no scope with a sniper rifle. it was just plain fun.
if i wanted to get technical and play a really good fps of course i would jump into pc game. batlefield 2 was my life. and dota.
but yeah halo gamers can be retarded. always talking trash. and then when you beat them they call you a modder. i was like wtf. do they really think they are that good of a player? they take it seriously as if they really are training to be master chief just doing it virtually.
mouse and keyboard reign supreme over a control pad no doubt about it.
and as for sticks and pads for fighting games....it took me so long to be able to play with both on the fly.
i.e.= 5 games playing tekken 3 only one pad and one joystick, current champ gets to have the picking of either.
alas for the auto aiming thingy......fuck yeah there is an auto aim in halo 2. even though it is minimal it still helps quite a bit. actually alot. you can see it when you are chasing a guy and he starts to turn the corner. i am not sure but i thought that when you play multiplayer that there is an option to turn the auto aiming off. in the same menu with the sensitivity setting.

Sadly I have not read Ringworld, but I highly suggest reading atleast a summary of Starhammer. You might just have a good laugh.

But to reiterate the point that I think I made earlier, here are three sets of books yall might want to read if you think the story is great (or just find plot summaries for them):
The Night's Dawn trilogy - Peter F Hamilton
The Culture books - Iain M Banks
The Starhammer series - Christopher Rowley
Oh man Night's Dawn trilogy was ace. Took me ages to bloody read throught them!

As for ringworld, I read it years ago so my memory is alittle hazy about it. Just remember there were like 3 people who end up on the ringworld. Also remember a lot of talk of about chance and probability. Must read this again!
