after going over the comparisons, it's pretty obvious they butchered the cover art quite badly :? . i mean, wow. some of them are incredibly bad and when sitting next to the original japanese cover, makes them look even worse.

but i guess that's marketing for you. was that really catering to the tastes of U.S. gamers? i was steeped into gaming back then and when i think about it through my memory, it probably wouldn't have seemed so bad to a young person since we were used to cartoons like He-man. american art style at the time reflected this popularity. the Neutopia 2 cover looks like a blatant attempt to re-capture the success of Zelda.

overall, it's a big difference! did it contribute the the fall of the TG-16? hm, maybe! other factors were definitely apart of it, but this bad art couldn't have helped any.

For all who are interested in box art in general, I recently added a feature on the SNES. The new thread is here:

Man, it seems like the US gets relatively bad artwork for just about every system. It's really strange. Excellent article!

Thanks for the props. The US does, indeed, get the shaft most of the time when it comes to box art. Recently, though, I noticed that the US actually did better than Europe in terms of the SNES. I'd call this a small miracle.

I recently did a similar feature on CD-ROM games for the TG-16/PC Engine. In case you're interesting, you can find it here:

And I started a new topic about it here:
