Agreed. The combos in that game were insane and it mostly took no skill to do a long combo.

I remember begin disappointed with Mortal Kombat 3 when it came out and used a similar "dial-a-combo" system. It was really over powered back then because not only did doing the combo take no to little skill it was also impossible to get away from them once they landed that first hit. Anyone remember losing to Sub-Zero or Kabal because of one cheap combo? I know I do.

At least fighters now-a-days allow you to get away from those combos. The MegaCrush in TvC is a great example of something that was really needed. We also have damage scaling now so those really long combos don't hurt as much as they used to.

KI blew me away in the arcades with it's graphics and all but I was still putting more quarters in the MK2, SF2, KOF, and Samurai Shodown machines than I ever spent on KI and other "next-gen" fighting games. Even when Tekken and Virtua Fighter started to have a huge following I was still playing the 2D fighters a long with just about everyone else I knew.
Weird that you name Kabal and Sub-Zero since Kabal has the weakest autocombos in the game and Sub can barely break 30% damage with a jump in. UMK3 has an incredibly dynamic combo system, the autocombos are just the very basic first step of that.

I don't remember Kabal or Sub-Zero's infinites.

Cyrax, on the other hand... God Damn Cyrax.

Kabal has the relaunch infinite, which several characters have and it only works against certain characters, but his is significantly worse than most because of his low damage autocombos. Sub-Zero doesn't have any infinites, even his most absurdly difficult and situational combos barely crack 50%

Cyrax on the other hand has almost a dozen different infinites and 100% combos, but he's still easily one of the bottom 3 worst characters in the game.

For me, the term "revolutionary" needs to cover more than shiny graphics.

KI's appeal was ultimately skin deep. People still play other fighting games competitively from the same era today that are "uglier", but have deeper mechanics.

This. KI just had fake plastic like 3D graphics, the same used in Donkey Kong Country.

I couldn't disagree more. KI Gold's mechanics are some of the deepest I've ever seen, only rivaled by Virtua Fighter 4. There was a logical system to breaking combos, there was an excellent parry system, and the combos themselves recquired a lot of skill. If you will dive deep into KI Gold, you can gain a huge amount of skill. If anything, it's problem was that it was too complex. An experienced fighter can dominate even a fairly good amateur because you just had so many options for defense and attack.

I think the people hating on KI are the people are got overwhelmed by the depth and just gave up.
