I share your enthusiasm but you forgot to put the "l" in ULTRA, lol. Hopefully those rumors of Rare bringing the franchise back are true!
Re: Killer Instinct 1 and 2 arcade
I've been playing ki2 on my pc alot this week.
It's about time for a brand new Killer Instinct.

Yuck. As far as fighting games go, KI sucks hard. It's better left in the era it came from, the few perks it had are more than dated now.

Maybe, but then again maybe it could bring something new to the table. My favorite character in the series was killed off in the first game, so it's not like I've have that to look forward to, but an update to the series with some fresh thought into it(since I highly doubt it would be the original creative team), well...who knows? We'll just have to see where it goes.SplashChick wrote:Yuck. As far as fighting games go, KI sucks hard. It's better left in the era it came from, the few perks it had are more than dated now.

For it's time it was revolutionary. Killer Instinct 2 looked absolutely amazing in the arcades. For the time those kinds of graphics were insane with it's pseudo 3d scrolling backdrops (I think they were pre-rendered and then cycled through as the characters moved left and right). That sort of thing had never been seen before at the time. I remember being blown away by it in the arcades. The completely crazy combo system was the main draw, initiating a combo-breaker was so incredibly satisfying. The only other game that I've found be so satisfying in that regard was SF3's parry system.SplashChick wrote:Yuck. As far as fighting games go, KI sucks hard. Honestly, how can you not love C-c-c-c-combo breaker!

Cinder all the way. I loved being able to shoot in, pop off a quick Master combo, then get out like he could.MrPopo wrote:Cinder or Riptor?Ack wrote:Maybe, but then again maybe it could bring something new to the table. Agreed. The combos in that game were insane and it mostly took no skill to do a long combo.SplashChick wrote:Yuck. As far as fighting games go, KI sucks hard. It's better left in the era it came from, the few perks it had are more than dated now.
I remember begin disappointed with Mortal Kombat 3 when it came out and used a similar "dial-a-combo" system. It was really over powered back then because not only did doing the combo take no to little skill it was also impossible to get away from them once they landed that first hit. Anyone remember losing to Sub-Zero or Kabal because of one cheap combo? I know I do.
At least fighters now-a-days allow you to get away from those combos. The MegaCrush in TvC is a great example of something that was really needed. We also have damage scaling now so those really long combos don't hurt as much as they used to.
KI blew me away in the arcades with it's graphics and all but I was still putting more quarters in the MK2, SF2, KOF, and Samurai Shodown machines than I ever spent on KI and other "next-gen" fighting games. Even when Tekken and Virtua Fighter started to have a huge following I was still playing the 2D fighters a long with just about everyone else I knew.
