I read somewhere that the game will actually boot with the Action replay, but once it has, you need to remove the action replay to continue playing (its the cheat device thats being detected). Not sure about the truth of this.

There are Action Replay cheats you need to enable in order for the game to continue to run with Action Replay cart inside. I play the pal ver on a US saturn. I need to enable a cheat code to bypass the cart lock out. It should be the same for the Japanese ver.

It sucks, I wish those prices translated to those games overseas releases. Guardian Heroes, Burning Rangers, et al are super cheap in Japan but command insane prices for the PAL/NTSC releases

The reason for that is because they came out well before the end of the consoles life in Japan and were released in large quantities. They are expensive over here because they were translated very late in the consoles life and released in limited quantities.
