Seriously the most spy, double agent, supernatural being, mindfucking and then forcefully mindraping, dark as hell insanity filled screwfest with the greatest and most intriguing storyline I've ever seen conceived in an Anime series ever.

Watch it.

Love that series, watched it years ago, rewatched the movie remakes from a awhile ago and just watched You Are Not Alone. Great stuff!

Didn't care much for either of these (although I did at least like the characters from Noir), but if you liked these two, you should check out Gunslinger Girl... it kinda had a similar vibe going, from the little bit of it I watched.

Anyway, my recommendations...

Kino's Journey

That's about all I can think of without mentioning obvious choices like Cowboy Bebop, Ghost In The Shell, or anything made by Gainax.

Also, if you are going to watch anything Shonen Jump, make it One Piece. Preferably the movies. One Piece has some of the best character development I've seen in a shonen series, and many of the movies are incredible, stylistically. I remember watching one of them, and really wondering if there were some Gainax employees moonlighting or something.

I think the most current anime I have seen is Steamboy, so I'm a little bit behind the curve. It's something I was into in the late 90s and sort of got bored with it. Still, a few you might want to see if you haven't are
