I've also heard the Sonic RPG on the DS is fairly good, give it a try.

All remakes but, Dragon Quest IV, V and Final Fantasy IV are awesome. Devil Summoner, Disgaea, The Mario & Luigi series and Nostalgia is all fantastic games with great stories. I've just started Nostalgia but so far its great. It has a nice oldschool vibe to it.

How was that Wizard of Oz rpg? I heard about it coming out and then it dropped off of the face of the earth.

None.

However SMT: Devil Survivor has a very nice setting, you may want to check it.

I was going to try Nostalgia, but then I read about insufferable random battle rates and it put me off. Oh well only a month until White Night Chronicles (yeah I know it's on the PS3)

Every game's battle rates seem so low after beating Black Sigil...

It's a fun game that will suck some time. The story though is terrible and forgettable. The Sonic universe doesn't really fit well in a RPG storyline. Like I said though it is fun to play if you don't go in expecting too much. Hardcore Sonic fans, like me, will find things to enjoy from it.

Let's see if most of us can agree here:
For o'skool fans:
FF IV, DQ V, and Chrono Trigger

For originality (very rare these days!):
The World Ends with You, SMT: Devil Survivor

Devil Survivor is a very unique blend of RPG and SRPG, and guess what? You only have one save slot!!! This is quite similar to the concept of Dead Rising, so you have to replay several times to get different characters.

I would recommend the Phoenix Wright games, Chrono Trigger, The World Ends With You, Mario and Luigi 2 and 3. I found all of those to be great, and all had good stories, except maybe the Mario ones. But the Mario games made up for it in gameplay.
