If you haven't played it on the SNES, get Chrono Trigger.

Etrian Odyssey I & II are amazing, but the story is more subtle. Your characters are all player-created, so it's more about discovering the mysteries of the dungeon.

It's certainly not an RPG, but the Phoenix Wright series has some amazing stories in it. Also, I second the Chrono Trigger suggestion.

I'll second Mr. Popo's recommendation. There's plenty of fun to be had with Etrian Odyssey, not to mention getting your ass beat.

I'm inclined to agree. Still a good game though, one of the few jrpgs I actually liked.
I'm only a a little ways into Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, but I've heard nothing but good things about bother the M&L games if you're ok with a humorous game.

I liked Dragon Quest IV. It had five different storys going on. Your likely to like at least one. Contact had a good story but it was ok game play wise.

lunar knights is turning out to be a really fun game. it's made by hideo kojima so if you dig his games you might want to check it out. both Mario and Luigi games on the ds are excellent as well. and for the sake of redundancy i will say that if you haven't played it chrono Trigger is a great game.
