I'm not saying 30 FPS isn't perfectly playable. It always makes me laugh when I see people complaining because they only get 40 FPS maxed out on whatever new game they're playing is. However, that's 30 FPS to both eyes at the same time. The 3D effect is switching between each eye and giving each eye 30 FPS offset from one another by a frame at a time.elvis wrote:You know most Sega Saturn games ran at 30FPS, right?MrPopo wrote:In order to be able to use an existing set each eye would be getting a 3D image at 30 FPS, which is low enough to be noticable when it switches back and forth from a right eye and left eye image.
And with delayed rendering techniques, many next-gen games run at around that for final output to screen for big chunks of gameplay too?
(Not forgetting film runs at 24FPS too).

That's only for LCDs though. Plasmas can run up to 600hz. Which is more than enough for a 120hz refresh (ie 60 FPS alternating left/right scene).MrPopo wrote:In order to be able to use an existing set each eye would be getting a 3D image at 30 FPS, which is low enough to be noticable when it switches back and forth from a right eye and left eye image.corn619 wrote:I don't see why they just can't make it so you could keep your existing HDTV and use some special glasses. There has to be a way you can just wear the glasses, and just update your console or player to enable 3D. Granted, I don't really know how the new 3D works but, its gonna be a tough sell to get people to dish out for a new screen. Especially since most people have replaced their existing sets with the recent price drops on HDTVs in the last couple years.

Ditto, same thing for HD-CRT's, my set manufactured in 2007 scans at 120hz by default (Take that LCD 120hz hype machine!) and has the ability to go much, much, much higher than that.Niode wrote:That's only for LCDs though. Rad Racer beat them to the punch by about 23 years.
It has always been gimmicky but maybe it'll catch on some day. I also think that if you could get rid of the glasses more people would give it a try.
I've personally never been a fan of it. But if they ever get TVs to the point where they are like TVs in the Jetsons cartoon I'd be all over it.

Hmm, Project Natal, 3D Gaming, damn, everyone's just rehashing Sega's ideas.

I'm afraid that you needed fixing. Avatar was a derivative, archetypal, preachy, CGI eye fuck.J T wrote:I loved Avatar. Stop trying to "fix" me. I'm not broken.

It's not that I am unaware that the movie had a heavy handed message or that it is basically Dances with Wolves where the wolves are blue people, but the special effects were unlike any seen before. It created a tangible and spectacularly beautiful fantasy world. Now the script pales in comparison to the effects, which makes the script seem worse than it is (it's an ok story, not great), but there has been no other movie where I have so felt like I was IN that new world. The only other fantasy world that has been this compelling, in my opinion, is the Dark Crystal (which was also criticized for having a poor script, a heavy handed message, and generally too scary for its underaged target audience).

Can't really reply to that. You pretty much said what I thought of the film. (SFX taking a back seat to good story, mainly)J T wrote:It's not that I am unaware that the movie had a heavy handed message or that it is basically Dances with Wolves where the wolves are blue people, but the special effects were unlike any seen before. I guess the only thing I can say is that I couldn't get immersed in the movie. The score was... eh. Every time something whimsical or magical happened, there was something to break the mood (mainly the chick Na'vi making creature noises). There was too much... WTHF in the movie as well. I mean, why the hell do the Na'vi hiss? Why the hell do the Na'vi have a literal connection with Pandora? (seriously, they connect with their horses with their hair) Why are there floating mountains? I'm in the majority on this one, James Cameron could've at least come up with some half-assed excuse. Why couldn't James Cameron have done Terminator 3/Salvaion and Alien 3/Resurrection instead?
This is not a bad movie by any means. I like the Mecha with the giant knife, even though it's useless in real life situations. The entire final battle was fantasic. It was exciting, it focused on all of the main protagonists (although it did kill most), and well, the giant knife.
I think Avatar will have what I call the "Halo effect". The people who found it average or mediocre are going to say they hate it out of their frustration that it's so overrated.
