thanks to this topic I'm on dungeon 4 of zelda. Chipping away today in between work.
I don't know if I've ever played through the thing in recent memory. I know i did when i was a kid, but i always start and get up to around dungeon 5 or 6. I think that is when the game starts getting harder for me.
we'll see what happens.

That's cool - it kind of gives a sense how big a deal the original Zelda was when it came out. You could go anywhere, explore etc... And it was so big the game had to come with a map! I like how it leaves some squares blank for you to fill in yourself. Kind of like a Zelda rainy day fun pack!nickfil wrote: http://www.nesworld.com/faqs/zeldamap.jpg
I picked up a nearly complete copy of zelda for the nes about a year ago. I say nearly complete becuase it didn't come with those inserts and some collectors are strict about that kinda thing. Anyway- it came with the map, cart and manual which is what i cared about.
When i opened it up- i found that some overzealous child cartographer ran wild all over it. Pretty neat. My brother and I did the same thing to our map back in the 80s. For all i know- this is the same one, but there were probably a lot of kids did this.
Making your own map seems like the true way to go, but i just wanted to play the game, see it and move on. If it was still the 80s and one of the only games I owned I probably would have felt more inclined to go all out and draw my own.
I maybe should frame it, although it's covered in little notes and icons showing where everything is - so it's kind of a function over fashion map!vash23n wrote: Frame it! Or get it blown up onto one of those canvases like the kids are doing these days. So sweet.

Looks like this game is extremely loved
I expected 1 or 2 replies, not 4 pages
I am also amazed of the time needed to be put into this game. 40 hours is a lot of time into a NES game.
I personally hate not knowing what to do next, its annoying because some how it changes from being a game into real life(in real life you got no guide lines, and no objective and no where to go next).
I found it funny that a lot of you suggested using maps and guides because when I used a cheat to find my way into Sonic a lot of people told me I killed the fun out of it.
But since it was shipped with a map I guess this is how it was supposed to be played.
in all honesty, after all this response I am excited to start on the game, looks like its an amazing journey.
But the world doesn't seem that big looking at the map

It's been a long time since I've played it very deeply and I don't think I ever actually beat it before, but I really don't think it's going to take 40 hours. You can get through the first couple of dungeons easily and the rest would take no more than a couple hours each until you get to No. 9, which could take a whole evening. Using a map for dungeon locations it should take 10-15 hours at most.

thing is- it really isn't that big. But passages are placed very knowingly through the world so that it creates an illusion of bigness. Getting from level 6 to 7 may seem like 2 squares difference, but in reality it is 8 at minimum just because you need to bend to the rules and paths set up.

It has been a while since i played last. I'm on dungeon 9- the last one. It is such a mind fuck.
The last 3 dungeons are crazy hard. I didn't die once for the first 6, but i died once in 8 and once in 9 already. ugh.
super fun. Can't wait to finish gannon off.

urgh, dungeon 9 was absolutely Horrible.
I played this for the first time last year, and I didn't lose one life until dungeon 9, when i probably lost about 5. And grinding those hearts back up took so long too

Different Genres. Using a map on a platformer is cheating, using a map of the overworld on an adventure game is more acceptable - though the one linked to that shows you everything I would consider cheating aswell. Knowing where all the free money and shops are is a step past acceptable.kingmohd84 wrote:I found it funny that a lot of you suggested using maps and guides because when I used a cheat to find my way into Sonic a lot of people told me I killed the fun out of it.

Dude. When I get my own place and set up my game room, that is being made into a poster and going on my wall.noiseredux wrote:http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs42/f/2009/ ... er1138.jpg
