Re: Time into the original Zelda
I say you play through the first one, but use a guide. I think it was a pretty fun game, but not knowing where you are going gets really frustrating and there really isnt very many clues

I disagree. Play it faq-less they way most of us did upon its release. Part of the charm of the Zelda series is the exploration, which is elimated when I guide says "okay, now go here and do this."

same here.... actually in between these posts i fired it up- grinded out 60 for the candle, picked up 2 hearts, and then beat the first dungeon.PGchris wrote:I haven't played this game in so long, but just looking at this map has me craving itnickfil wrote:the 7 year old in me just squealed.noiseredux wrote:http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs42/f/2009/ ... er1138.jpg
Love this game.
I agree. The game is so much more rewarding when you play it faq-less. The only reason i actually remember where everything is, is because i had to tooth and nail fight to get to it. So much of the appeal of this game is tight controls and exploration. You really feel like you are all alone in the wild.noiseredux wrote:I disagree. and even for a veteran like myself- I still missed a few of those stores that are on the map. Could've gotten some deals.
That said- if you do get bored or frustrated with it switch to link to the past on the snes. That game is way more polished and gives you a mode 7 map and actually gives you clues to the locations of stuff.

Re: Time into the original Zelda
Id say that the charm of discovery is lost on most of the sequels because it tells you what to do. One of the reasons I love the first Zelda and Windwaker is that both allow you to explore the world fairly fully at any time. Sure you cant DO much in some of the places but you can get there. This thrill of discovery was also in the Elder Scrolls titles but Zelda gave it to us with just enough action (ES games can be slow going).
Dont get me wrong, it is pretty infuriating the first few times without a map or guide. But a full map and full guide just kills one of the biggest parts of the game.

I agree. Don't use a map. The sense of exploration was kind of the point of the game. That's what Miyamoto was trying to capture when designing it. If you want a map, make your own. It's a lot more fun.fastbilly1 wrote: Dont get me wrong, it is pretty infuriating the first few times without a map or guide. I never used a map, though. I probably haven't played the game at all in at least five years, but if you show me any single screen of the overworld I could fire the game up and walk right to it.

Re: Time into the original Zelda
I was just suggesting using a FAQ if you are trying to give the game a quick play through before you get into a A Link to the Past. Obviously, if you want to put the time into the NES version go for it, but be prepared to spend a lot of time on it. I personally love both games, the original is timeless to me, but if you peel away the nostalgia it really is dated. A Ling to the Past is still awesome to play.

I agree about not using a faq or map. Kinda defeats the purpose of playing it in the first place. It may take longer to play, but so much more rewarding finding all the secrets of Hyrule yourself than being told where to go. Its all about the exploration and discovery man!

I didnt feel like spending 10000 hours wandering around so I printed off a map complete with dungeon locations. I played it last summer but I've still got it up on my wall
