Franchises that should have never continued
Re: Franchises that should have never continued
Guys, guys, guys, can we stop arguing on whether KoF is a SF2 ripoff or not and just agree that both are PWned by Pit Fighter?

Best post in this thread +1the7k wrote:Point One: What about Street Fighter II and Street Fighter II Turbo? What about Street Fighter Alpha 2 and Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold? What about Street Fighter III: New Generation and Street Fighter III: Second Impact? I think I've checked my facts plenty. Compare KOF'96 to '97. Then '97 to '98. Then '98 to '99. Then '99 to 2k. Keep going. The changes that took place could fill pages. Not all the changes have been good changes (see KOF2k1), but at least there were plenty of them.Weekend_Warrior wrote:I'm pretty sure that Street Fighter games have almost always introduced new backgrounds along with new gameplay mechanics. Better check your facts therethe7k wrote: Take a look at how different each King of Fighters is compared to each Street Fighter. While Capcom usually changed a few moves up and threw in a couple of characters every now and then, KOF always had new characters, new backgrounds, new gameplay mechanics, new stories, a new GUI, etc.
Hey, let's face it. Almost every 2D fighting game since Street Fighter is a rip-off. Even Mortal Kombat frequently gets accused of being a Street Fighter rip-off even though it featured realistic, digitized graphics and ushered in a new level of violence in video games with horrific finishing moves. Also, tell me: How was it a SF rip-off? Because it had characters fighting each other on a 2D plane?
If anybody plays KOF'98, then KOF'2k2, and thinks it's the same damn game, then I would encourage them to start out with Super Mario Bros - KOF is a bit too complex to be anyone's first game ever.
Point Two: And thus, because people label it a Street Fighter II clone makes it a fact? That's such a boneheaded conclusion, it makes me want to stop taking my heart medicine. You want a Street Fighter II clone? Check out the first Fighter's History.
Yep, I know im the one ya love to hate.

I'm surprised no one brought up Earthworm Jim. The first two are obviously classics, then someone thought it would be a good idea to try and convert the series to 3D. Thankfully it was only one attempt and most of my Earthworm Jim memories are safe in 16-bit land.

You got it, GSZX1337. By "immediate predecessors," I was referring specifically to Mega Man 7 and 8, which did a lot of things the NES games didn't.GSZX1337 wrote:It followed the original formula, but it took a different direction than Mega Man 8 by going back to basics (and not having Auto).SplashChick wrote:Dude, have you played Mega Man 9? It follows the original formula down to the letter.Flashman85 wrote:Ditto. Now, maybe it's just your word choice here, but Metroid and the original Mega Man series technically haven't been rebooted, at least not in the sense that James Bond and Star Trek recently were. Other M (at least as far as I've heard) and Mega Man 9 are true continuations of the series, but they take a different direction from their immediate predecessors.
Exactly right. I was using "reboot" to mean, "Let's throw out everything and start up a new continuity that's totally different except for the names and general personalities of the characters." Sorry; I've been blogging a lot about sequels vs. remakes vs. reboots this past year, so I automatically assume I'm on the same page as everyone else with terminology.Luke wrote:I believe he thinks that reboot means to restart as well as to alter something.
No biggie.
I was surprised to hear you mention EWJ, but I think that's because there are so few games in the series compared to the ones we've been mentioning. Still, from what I've heard, maybe it's a good idea they didn't continue on with 3D.hiphophead34 wrote:I'm surprised no one brought up Earthworm Jim. Sorry for the sheer amount of space this post is taking up.

Fix'd. All the Bubsy stuff was lame to me. I especially hate the way Bubsy 1 and 2 control, it's far too loose.Jrecee wrote:How the hell did Bubsy get a game?
Oh, and the franchises I think should have ended are:
Medal of honor, after Frontline and Spearhead
Sonic the Hedgehog, after Sonic Adventure 2
Ace Combat, after Shattered Skies (number 4)
SimCity, after 3000 Unlimited
Tony Hawk, after THPS 4
Banjo Kazooie, after Tooie
Phoenix Wright, after Trials and Tribulations (although the next game looks promising).
