Finished my first platformer

Post by RCBH928 »

Yes I finally did!
I finished a platformer!
I believe it is the first game I complete pre-psx era,
and unbelievable to me its Sonic!

First thing first why I never completed platformers earlier on(Snes Genesis type)
1) No way to save, means anything you do is lost unless you complete the whole thing
2)I never knew how many levels shall I go through 6 or 100, how long will I keep playing?
3) No way to know where you are going, you only have limited number of lives and hardly any continues. If you jump on a platform and surprisingly it breaks and that was the last life you got in the final stage, you have to repeat the whole 30-60 min of play just to see whats after that and to die again.

How I did it:
*I looked into a tutorial to see how many levels are there and take notice when I am closer to the end .
*I used the cheat to select levels, to test each one out and know the insides and outsides of the level. So no more surprises, no more need to replay 30 min just to see whats behind that platform.
*Patience, I am not patient, I rush everything, I never ever take my time. I hate slow progress. But i took it slowly
*Being brave, long ago I used to be afraid to jump into unknown areas or make long jumps in fear of losing my progress. With level selector I don't give a damn, I tested out everything.
*I watched youtube tutorial on how to beat the final boss, because I really didn't want to repeat the whole thing from that point+I didn't know how to take down the boss. I only saw the final stage once(1 life) before I completed the game.

Finally, why i never thought I would complete Sonic?
Because Sonic is fast, there are lots of jumps and hoops, many secret areas and double/triple paths to complete the level. I wasn't able to complete the original Mario where you had only to jump from platform to platform, how will I complete Sonic which dashes around and flies in the air with complex level designs.

Comments----
Positive:
*The game is really enjoyable specially do to the control scheme, although gets a bit frustrating at times
*Levels design in the older days had a lot more thought put into them, they are designed in such a way to be fun yet challenging at the same time, and they make sure the experience in enjoyable all along-its for every one no need to split the market hardcore/casual
*The soundtrack is fantastic, specially the Marble Zone one, its damn retro and reminds me of the old days(you don't hear such music now) , its also highly distinguishable.

Negatives:
-I completed the game in 1.5 hours, isn't this too short even for that period of time? Or was the idea to play it over and over , even if you are done with it a 1000 times?

One member in the forum gave me a tip that practice makes perfect, and yes it does!

I didnt collect all the the Chaos Emeralds, what happens?

I had 13 lives , lost 8 of them in the Starlight boss battle.I thought this was it, am not going to beat this.

I never thought the day I complete a Snes/genesis platformer is ever coming! :D

I will be playing Sonic 2

Sounds like you took all the fun out of it to me. I still remember how amazed I was first time I saw the casino level, it looked amazing to me then...

No I haven't, I just didn't give it enough of a shot. I did complete mario 64/kazooie/conker , but none that is 2D.

As I was playing, I was thinking to myself the starlight boss is the easiest, because I can hit him or bomb, but I got frustrated. Because its been a while of ease and concentration, I think sometime I got ADD.

Krooner, I think you are talking about the Dreamcast game, I am talking about the Genesis one.

No Megadrive version. all those purples and pinball bouncers... simpler times then my friend, we were very easily impressed did they call it Spring hill zone or something? I can't remember, COPE UP ON CPU I always though that was a secret code for something.

In my experience, most platformers of the era took 2 hours on average.

If you get all the Chaos Emeralds, you get a slightly different ending. Wouldn't want to spoil it - although there really isn't much to spoil - so I'll leave it at that.

Krooner is referring to Sonic the Hedgehog 2. You see Casino Night early into that game.

By the way, if you choose to play Sonic 2 with Sonic alone, you should be able to get all the emeralds easy enough if you search the levels for checkpoints. I find it impossible with Tails, though.
Once you get all the emeralds, collect 50 rings and jump. That will make the rest of the game a lot easier.

Lots of old console games can be finished in 30-60 minutes once you're an expert and know how to do it. Its the months and months of practice and learning where things were that made the game longer. Its an odd contradiction. People these days complain if a game thay paid $40-60 for is only 10 hours long. Back then the games were shorter. Today most games let you save or continue, so you can keep going through them quicker. Back then you did a lot of restarting.

Christ I feel old. I was finishing platformers before half the people on this board was even born. Although, one of the positive things about being that old is that when I realize I'm that old and get depressed about it I can drink heavily. Well, guess it's time to hit the bar and boot up some old school games...

Hmm, I gotta second the guy who said it sounded like you took the fun out of it. It sounds like you played it just for the sake of beating it, not to enjoy it. The level designs were amazing (like you said) but thats what makes the games still fun for me today. I've played through them a lot, but there are still alternate routes or I can play through them at a slower speed to find other secrets.

The game was only short for you because you cheated your way through it. The game isn't that hard and the early levels are still fun to play over and over if you die at a later level and have to start over. You're better at those early levels from experience so you enjoy the levels more and set yourself up for the part you had trouble at.

Try to play Sonic 2 properly. I am curious how it will change your experience.
