I was only like 12 or 13 when the 64 was out
I recall being in 3D was something so amazing, its unmatched experience. Its 3D , its a world you can move in, its not jumping platform. That was amazing.
I do NOT recall if the graphics were looked at as superb(though I recall the 3D spirits like in SNES Killer Instinct were superb for that period), or if they looked awful 3D. Any one remembers?
I also remember Mario 64, a world where you jump into a painting to start a level? That got to be the best fantasy world ever! Still is if you ask me, that castle design is so great and fun. If it wasn't frustrating(I hate thin edges, and jumping over carpets) I would play that game to death.

I'm not going to disagree per se, but don't you think this had more to do with Sega lack of foresight rather than some great vision? Yeah, it's great now that early 3D has aged terribly, but Sega designed a 2D power house because that's the way the world was at that time. It's what they knew. But the 3D tide washed over the industry and anyone not on board was washed away.Pulsar_t wrote:I know this is Nintendo's sub-board but looking back we have to appreciate what Sega were trying to do with the Saturn, their most powerful 2D powerhouse ever. It had passable 3D support but Sega weren't keen to jump on the 3D bandwagon the way Sony were doing at the time. In retrospect the 3D on the Playstation is just plain horrible by any standards, and Nintendo failed to deliver on their SGi-quality hype.
I believe that games with a lot of effort behind them during the 6th gen era (Shenmue, God of War, Ico etc) will age gracefully on artistic merit alone. Heck a few of the simplistic, vector-like visuals of select 32-bit titles easily pip a great deal of what is offered today in terms of style and presentation. Feel free to disagree

I don't think worst graphics will stop me from playing it if its an awesome game. I still think the DC has really great graphics like Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur. PS2 is hit and miss when it comes to graphics, but graphics don't really matter to me that much. To me 2D doesn't look as bad as early 3D stuff.
Systems: Sega Dreamcast(x2), Sega Genesis(x2), Sega Saturn, Sega CD, Genmobile (portable Genesis), FC Twin, PSX, PS2(x2), GBA, SP, Xbox 360, N64, Showcase Arcade

Sadly, yes, last gen's graphics are starting to look bad to me now. But I won't let bad graphics keep me from playing good games. Resident Evil 4 may not look amazing anymore, but it's still fun, and that's what really counts. Although, I really do love good graphics.

I believe it depends in what game you are trying to play.
For PS games I prefer playing them on emulators because, with the right plugins, sometimes you can get better graphics than the original ones, like better anti-aliasing.
Overall, 2D games are easier to play even after years.

Re: Did it start to happen?
The answer is simple. Just don't play any next-gen games. That way last-gen games look great.
Re: Did it start to happen?
I am not complaining
I just find it weird and funny that every time a new console is out I am(and everyone else) "WOW, it doesn't get any better than this! This looks so real!"
and later next-gen we find it underpowered/jagged missing details.
Although this generation is probably the first generation I will say I can see improvement to be made specially on ps3, I am not sure why ps3 games look pale or bleached. I also notice textures sometimes needs enhancing, not to mention some blocky 3D models of minor objects

The constant search for new heights of tech amazement is one thing that has kept me into gaming all these years.kingmohd84 wrote:I just find it weird and funny that every time a new console is out I am(and everyone else) "WOW, it doesn't get any better than this! This looks so real!"
