Did it start to happen?

Post by RCBH928 »

My friend gave me some time ago few gamecube games that he does NOT want. I don't like racers, but I decided to check out NFS: Most Wanted, its free what the heck.

Remember how when some new console gets out and our jaws drop at how cool the graphics are and we can't imagine something more realistic?

Well thats how I felt about the Gamecube, it was amazing with smooth large models 3D models. I am also one of the guys who says that I don't see much difference in last gen (ps2/gc) graphics and current gen graphics.

So I popped in the game and I was like "NNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"
Whats with the horrible graphics? The game is filled with jaggies, it looks like a PSX game!!
I can't believe these graphics were top notch just 5 years ago!
Is it starting to happen? Are we starting to look at last gen. graphics to be not good enough any more?

Also on Ninja Gaiden Black, a game that I thought had best graphics ever and impossible to create anything better, I started to see how plain the graphics.... probably because ps3/360 are very detailed in HD, there are mini scratches on the walls for example.

Was this game with bad graphics since launch or is it starting to happen?

Btw, Am I supposed to lose against Razor at the start of the game? Thats what happened and story moved on from there.

Love the FMV.

I felt that way not too long ago when I played Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door on the gamecube and after finishing it, I played the predecessor, Paper Mario 64. But I continued the game and after an hour or so, I forgot about the differences. I enjoyed the gameplay.

Another example was playing Zelda: Minish Cap & Links to the Past and then playing the Gameboy Link's Awakening. Same thing, I adjusted and I forgot about the differences.

We went from 320X240 to 640X480 graphics, I still find ps1 games ok looking. It's all about the gameplay and design for me.

same thing for me with paper mario. if the story and gameplay is great, it kinda compensates in a strange way for graphics, or lack thereof.

and yes, you are destined to lose to Razor in the beginning of NFS MW. you race, he rigs your M3, you lose, he takes said car in pinkslip race, and the goal of the game is to work your way up thru 15 of Razor's minions taking them out one by one and eventually beating Razor and winning your M3 back.

I picked it up a few months ago and am slowly going thru it. I think over one weekend and just a few hours, i managed to take out blacklist members 15-11. It's not all that hard. So far.

To me it goes like this: NES and SNES have great graphics, N64 and PSX have terrible graphics, Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube, Xbox, and Wii are hit or miss. Some games have shit graphics while some are still amazing. Xbox 360 and PS3 have perfect graphics. But will this change in the next gen?

Well, this is my point.
Whatever generation we are in we think"WOW AMAZING, IT CAN"T GET ANY BETTER" . I recall some of the 3D stuff on the snes(DK, Mario RPG) thinking this is the future now! But after a while, it looks outdated.

Last gen. I was like "Okay, thats it, this is the best graphics possible" now the NFS game looks jaggies and all. I recently played battalion and the graphics looked smooth and all, though I started to notice the lack of details.

Maybe in 5 years time, I guess we will run Drake's Fortune 2 and go"NOOOOOO MY EYES!"
if you say thats impossible, its about the exact thing we said about every gen.

If you want a shellshocker play the original Elder Scrolls Arena or even Daggerfall after playing Oblivion.
Thanks everyone...

I think alot of it depends on what game youre playing and when. If you go from MGS4 to MGS3, youll notice a pretty big difference. FFXII looks absolutely lousy on a big hdtv. But going from some wii games to, say, eternal darkness on the gamecube, you might not see it as much.

Then again, I've been doing alot of retro gaming lately, so I might be more privy at the moment to any big jumps forward in graphics.
