haha i see what you mean,Gnashvar wrote:If you want a shellshocker play the original Elder Scrolls Arena or even Daggerfall after playing Oblivion.
I guess I was extra shocked because current generation car games are extremely well done(forza) the gameplay might be better than the 3D video scenes in NFS

I know this is Nintendo's sub-board but looking back we have to appreciate what Sega were trying to do with the Saturn, their most powerful 2D powerhouse ever. It had passable 3D support but Sega weren't keen to jump on the 3D bandwagon the way Sony were doing at the time. In retrospect the 3D on the Playstation is just plain horrible by any standards, and Nintendo failed to deliver on their SGi-quality hype.
I believe that games with a lot of effort behind them during the 6th gen era (Shenmue, God of War, Ico etc) will age gracefully on artistic merit alone. Heck a few of the simplistic, vector-like visuals of select 32-bit titles easily pip a great deal of what is offered today in terms of style and presentation. Feel free to disagree

Graphics really don't mean much to me. Maybe it's because I haven't played the newer systems much if at all, or I find that the really bad PSX and N64 graphics have a certain charm to them. For example, the fact in the Zelda games for N64 the faces are so obviously plastered on, or that the mouths don't move in Metal Gear Solid. Or the mouth movement when people talk in Starfox 64. It's part of the experience.

What would you say Saturn's best 2D games? Something unmatched by other systems?Pulsar_t wrote:I know this is Nintendo's sub-board but looking back we have to appreciate what Sega were trying to do with the Saturn, their most powerful 2D powerhouse ever. and what is SG-i?
I like older graphics, it is part of the experience, but I was a little upset since I always believe gamecube delivered great graphics.

Re: Did it start to happen?
For me, I love all 2D graphics. But I can't stand crappy 3D graphics. A lot of N64 and PSX games are hard for me to play because of that. But GameCube, PS2, and Xbox are mostly good, just not detailed.
Re: Did it start to happen?
Evidently Nintendo's cart technology was a crippling factor when it came to texturing, and the video chip wasn't as powerful as promised by the hype surrounding Nintendo's Project Reality back in 1994. SGI (Silicon Graphics, Incorporated) used to be one of the biggest names in dedicated CG workstation technology but the advent of faster, parallel CPUs and GPUs made them uncompetitive which ultimately led to their demise. The Voodoo chipset was more powerful than the N64's despite both coming out close to one another.kingmohd84 wrote:What would you say Saturn's best 2D games? Something unmatched by other systems?

I'm no expert on the Sega Saturn but if you take at some of their STV conversions (mainly Radiant Silvergun) it would be obvious the Saturn was a strong 2D contender albeit at the wrong period of time.

I agree with darthmunky. For me, when the focus moved from 2D to 3D there was a huge hit in the detail and style of the way games look. I never understood how the bland, chunky, polygon looking graphics could be considered attractive - and it seemed to me that all these games looked the same and had no distinctive style. It's just now in the current generation, where technology has gotten to the point of being able to get to that level of styled detail in 3D, that I think things are actually looking good again. Though, when it really comes down to it, it's all about the gameplay anyhow.
