oceanic is my personal favorite. i like celestial but i think they really came into their own on oceanic.glynnahab wrote:Isis is one of my favorite bands, and was a HUGE influence on my old instrumental band. I'm not particularly fond of their super-early stuff, and the most recent album was somewhat of a letdown, though.
That said, Oceanic, Panopticon, and In the Absence of Truth are all fantastic albums. I've seen them live several times, and only the show where they opened for Tool sucked. Isis only played three or four songs, and was followed by a lousy Tool show where Maynard was apparently feeling lazy (or sick) and would hold the mic out to the crowd for the choruses of the more popular songs.
Also, no one's mentioned Mogwai or Tortoise in this thread. If you're a fan of Isis or Pelican, you owe it to yourself to listen to both of them. Both of those bands are partially credited with the creation of the post-rock genre. Although Isis is considered to be the founders of "post-metal", along with bands like Godflesh and Neurosis.
Thanks for the links, aaron and everyone else. I will be checking out those other bands now.
PGChris, have you heard the band Give? It's the guitarist and (i think) the drummer from LOJ. they played our house this summer with backtrack and it seriously blew my mind. it's like LOJ ripping off Burn but with insane guitar work over it all. i can't find a myspace or a link but trust me, it rules. the new LOJ is awesome also.
