That said, Oceanic, Panopticon, and In the Absence of Truth are all fantastic albums. I've seen them live several times, and only the show where they opened for Tool sucked. Isis only played three or four songs, and was followed by a lousy Tool show where Maynard was apparently feeling lazy (or sick) and would hold the mic out to the crowd for the choruses of the more popular songs.

Also, no one's mentioned Mogwai or Tortoise in this thread. If you're a fan of Isis or Pelican, you owe it to yourself to listen to both of them. Both of those bands are partially credited with the creation of the post-rock genre. Although Isis is considered to be the founders of "post-metal", along with bands like Godflesh and Neurosis.

Thanks for the links, aaron and everyone else. I will be checking out those other bands now.
oceanic is my personal favorite. i like celestial but i think they really came into their own on oceanic.

PGChris, have you heard the band Give? It's the guitarist and (i think) the drummer from LOJ. they played our house this summer with backtrack and it seriously blew my mind. it's like LOJ ripping off Burn but with insane guitar work over it all. i can't find a myspace or a link but trust me, it rules. the new LOJ is awesome also.

On that note, listen to Don Caballero, Mono, Explosions in the Sky

seriously, if you like explosions in the sky, you owe it to yourself to at least listen to the album "monologue" by the black heart rebellion. it's like if explosions in the sky was a little heavier and had a vocalist. the vocals are aggressive but they are really low in the mix, so it makes a nice effect. here's a link, i hope it's okay to post this, if not someone edit this and everyone else pm me if you want it.

mono rules.

don caballero was awesome but their later stuff (post-reunion or whatever) is not that great, imo.

Yes, because any band older than 5-10 years is not worth listening to.

all good choices.

i'm pretty sure everyone on this forum has pretty good taste in music, for the most part. i define "good taste" as being able to listen to different forms of music and at least appreciate it, even if you don't particularly like it.

While I love the older stuff, I usually don't talk about it because it's common knowledge - or should be, at least. Not to mention the fact that I've heard bands like Zeppelin, Floyd, etc. thousands of times, literally. (I listen to genres other than rock, btw, just listing off a few examples.)

I personally tend to search out more recent bands/artists to see how they approach the medium considering that rock music is generally comprised of chords that have been in use for decades. - namely 5th chords/power chords as well as the basic guitar chords like E major, A minor, etc. that people usually learn when they first start playing.

This is a bit of a generalized statement, obviously, but there are about 20 or so chords that nearly EVERY rock band uses repeatedly - including the 12 possible power chords. In other words, everything's been done before. I personally want to hear something new (with a creative and tasteful approach) because there are only so many progressions to be created with such a limited selection of chords.

Modern radio and television have done nothing to help, of course. In promoting shit like Nickelback and Theory of a fucking Deadman (<--worst.band.ever), they are simply regurgitating the same exact sounds that have been rotating on the radio since the early 90's. Post-grunge has pretty much ruined bands like Nirvana and Alice in Chains for me.

Sorry for the rant, guys. This may just be my longest post ever. Hopefully someone reads it... but I'll understand if you didn't.

I stopped listening to the radio years ago for various reasons and this is very old news, but this is appropriate to your opinion (which I happen to agree with). NPR show and download for the stereo MP3 of "How You Remind Me of Someday".

"Should be" common knowledge are the key words, there. Not nearly enough people have ever heard of Television. Hell, a lot of people don't know much of or haven't even heard of a lot of the great jazz artists that span the decades.
