Both socialists and communists are democrats, keep that in mind.
And yes, I agree that the Napoleonic wars were kind of similar to WWII on the german side. They had to mantain two fronts, France in WWII and Spain in the Napoleonic wars on the left and Russion on the right. Both suffered from guerrilla tactics and both were forced to battle in a burned wasteland with nothing to supply their soldiers.

Re: Obama wins Nobel Prize
A democratic state can hold socialist beliefs and practices. Just as a communist state can hold socialist beliefs and practices. Example in our democratic state we have public schools, firehouses, police, and hospitals. These are socialist practices, but it doesn't make democracy socialism or vice versa.General_Norris wrote:Both socialists and communists are democrats, keep that in mind.
But democracy, communism, and socialism are three different things. And those who prescribe to a specific belief doesn't mean they'll prescribe to another in the group. It's very common for a communicst to also be a socialist merely because communism was constructed on top of the beliefs in socialism (i.e. Marx). But democracy??? Socialist and communists being democrats? No, no no no, no. I don't know where you'd get that idea. It just doesn't make sense.
Oh and to be clear...
Democracy - a SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT where the actual governing is carried out by the people. Or the power is granted to some representative in the case of a Representativ Democracy (which is what the U.S.A. is)
Communism - is a SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT wrapped with an economic structure that promotes the shared wealth of a nation through a system that egalitarian and classless.
Socialsim - a ECONOMIC TEHORY in which advocating direct public ownership and administration of production.
Socialism isn't a form of gov't. And actually it's that Socialism is to Free Market, as Communism is to Democracy.
Now if you were trying to say that "those who consider themselves socialists or communists in the U.S. tend to be Democrats (the party democrats, not the system democracy).... you again are wrong. Just because some of them are registered Democrat, or that they vote Democrat doesn't mean that socialists are democrats... or even that those all those socialists registered as democrats consider themselves to be. There is a lot of ignorance and mythology behind the dual-party system that a lot of socialists don't know how to overcome. It's very difficult to get yourself heard as any other party... like the Libertarians, one of the largest 3rd parties.
I consider myself a socialist and communist, but I believe in all our freedoms as well, but I don't want to get started on the whole communism evil bullshit, just consider it as follows... there are a lot of Christians out there who call themselves Christian but don't think the whole country should be Christian. I am a communist who doesn't believe everyone should believe in communism... that's your freedom.
I am registered as unaffiliated. And last election I did NOT vote democrat (nor did I vote Republican). I've actually never voted democrat in my life. The choice of socialists and communists in this country voting democrat can be for MANY reasons... but it doesn't mean that socialists and communists ARE democrats (or vice versa).

Not to mention, how many soldiers died in that war, something like 20 million. How about all the Chinese, of Fench, British.....
I will take a chance on a preemptive strike. So no, I dont mind paying, though I cannot quantify what was really saved as we will never know, I can quantify what would have been saved by stopping other maniacs before they got too far.
Strange, governement wants to decide my healthcare, whether or not I get treatment and then send me to jail if I dont pay for their idea of healthcare. A crime not to have health insurance, great, more prisoners more prisons, morre people without money because they are forced to pay for healthcare with their freedom.
Three per cent of our country is in prison right now. 9 milion in mates. So keep on giving the government more power.
The whole point is that you should want to live free of our government as it is there to serve you not for you to serve it. JFK says ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country???? WTF, then he gets us in Vietnam. Nixon gets us out, strange, Nixon as a replublican.... I do plenty for my country, I vote and I PAY taxes. The government is funded on my shoulders and everyone elses who contributes. Ask the hard working taxpayer what there country has really done for them.
So dont bother with the Bush bashing, at least he had the NUTS to do the unpopular thing. He got in your face and did what he said he would do. He didnt cost me more money or threaten to send me to prison.
Obama/Bieden or however you spell it sounds way to much like OSAMA BIN LADEN for my taste. Muslim blows up building, then becomes president. They want to tell you how to live, where to piss and how many times you wipe after you shit, savor your freedom because in the end this person will take as much of it as possible.
One final thing, if it was not for the brave AMERICAN soldiers ALL of EUROPE would be GERMANY right now and all of ASIA would be JAPAN. Think about that. Thank my grandparent and my friends grandparents and everyone who fought in WW2 for that. So next time someone sits in their chair at night in England or France or Spain of China and pisses and moans about the USA they CAN because of us. Wonder if we will ever be repayed for that??????????

Yes, this is the kind of shit we've all been missing. About the only thing that I haven't seen is some long story about mind altering substances causing wacky hijinks, but that'll come in due time.

Man I got my masters in European history, 1750 - present with a lot of emphasis on WWII from the German standpoint. I must say that I never heard an argument as heated as the one that seems to have erupted here. I will say that most Americans, English, French, Germans, Russians agree about how WWII ended, particularly Hitler's downfall. I have seen a lot of good responses here so I am not going to get too involved - especially since this is a thread about Obama winning the Nobel. I just want to agree that the Americans did NOT win WWI or WWII. They added fresh troops, sure, to the exhausted lines of the Allies, but Germany was going through turmoil by the time the Americans entered both WWI and WWII. The people were tiring of war and many of Germany's great cities were in ruins from Allied bombing. In WWI and WWII German soldiers (not necessarily the Nazi soldiers as not every soldier was a Nazi) were suffering from very low morale and were very disenchanted with their country and government. I remember studying texts with plenty of examples of soldiers turning from battle to steal chocolate bars they found on fallen enemy soldiers because they were so starved. Citizens were losing their minds from the constant bombing around them, I recall another book specifically on Allied bombing that detailed the typical scenes German people dealt with from day to day - corpses, many of which were melted or dismembered, rubble, and scarce food. I remember one section that talked of a lady carrying around her child's body in a suitcase because she refused to let go.
Anyhoo. This is the scene that the Americans joined in on. Saying they won the war is like saying I beat up a professional boxer who was already half unconcious from a fight against another boxer. Sure we helped, but we didn't turn the tide in anyway. As for Japan. Japan had a lot of interest invested in Germany because they were a very isolated country. A big reason for joining with Germany was the resources that would become available to them if Germany won the war. Many think the reason Japan held out so long in joining was to see what power looked to have the best chance of winning. Once Germany was defeated, Japan would have crumbled. There was a desire to speed up the process, of course, by attempting another amphibious invasion at the cost of countless more lives. Ultimately the atomic weapon was decided as a better end as it would place the casualties on the side of the enemy. Yes the Americans dropped the bomb, but the development of the bomb was through a worldwide effort. Don't forget the nationality of the man responsible for the bombs development. As Europe was already in ruins and responsible for keeping the newly defeated Germany in check while the rest of the details of the war were cleaned up, US was the obvious choice to take on the mission of dropping the bomb. The US was largely untouched by the war (not emotionally or economically of course and not counting Pearl Harbor) and, since they joined relatively late, they had the fresh manpower to donate to the cause.
That is all I have to say. As for Obama winning the prize. Me thinks it was a good way to suggest he keep his mind in check and not succumb to the temptations previous presidents have feel victim too - mainly, letting things just continue as they have. Almost saying, "we remember what you promised and don't forget it." I agree also that thinking Obama would have changed the country and dragged us into some great new era in less than a year is absurd. This has already been said, but the first 2-3 years is spent picking up the pieces of what came before. I expect in the second term we will start to see the positive things he has done whether he is still president or not. Also, there are a lot of stupid things that have been done in the past and this country needed someone who was going to be hard on us in order to get us out of the shit. That is why Obama is so unpopular at the moment. He is not doing what is popular and what will get him reelected, he is doing what needs to be done. That is a good president.
Whoops I typed way more than I meant to. That always happens when I check this website so late at night and am half asleep.
