Clock Tower: The First Fear

Ok, so this is technically the PS1 version's title. It's a port of the Super Famicom game Clock Tower, which is the first in the Clock Tower series. Up until Clock Tower 2(technically the third in the series, and really only a spin off title), these games were all point and click adventures. The series generally focuses on a female protagonist who is being pursued by a murderer, and who is unable to fight back. Instead she must find ways to hide from them wherever possible. In the first game, it's a psychopath named Bobby, who is armed with a large pair of scissors(the scissors-wielding maniac would also appear in the second, known as Clock Tower outside of Japan).

Jennifer Simpson is a child from the fictional Granite Orphanage in Romsdalen, Norway. She and her friends, who are also orphans (Laura, Ann and Lotte) are adopted in September 1995 by a wealthy recluse named Mr. Barrows, who lives in a mansion known as the "Clock Tower", named after its most predominant feature. The game immediately begins with these characters walking towards the Barrows mansion and settling in the main foyer. Mary, a maid in employment of Mr. Barrows, leaves to find Mr. Barrows, but she takes an unusually long time. Jennifer offers to investigate, but upon leaving the room, a scream is heard from the main foyer. Jennifer returns to find the lights are off and the girls are missing. She soon finds herself being stalked after finding one of her friends killed by a murderous little boy with deformed features, wielding a huge pair of scissors. The boy is Bobby Barrows, the Scissorman, who will be Jennifer's main stalker and tormentor for the rest of the game.

The game features multiple endings, so there's lots of replay value. If you're into point and click games on consoles, or you're a fan of the Clock Tower games, why not take a little time and check this one out. It was never released outside of Japan unfortunately, though it appeared on the Super Famicom, PlayStation, WonderSwan, and PC.

Ah yes, multiple endings.. How I miss thee. As for Clock Tower the fact the protagonist did have only a limited number of options at her disposal to defend herself (mainly running away most of the time if I'm correct ) was quite a brave design decision at the time.

sweet box art. They don't make em like that anymore.

I'll be firing up this guy later tonight. Looking forward to running away from some comically large Scissors.

Yeah, unfortunately the PS1's box art isn't nearly as good, though it did come packaged with a mini-comic book. It's sitting in my collection right now as the only import PS1 game I own.

man- what a weird game. It is kinda survival kinda point and click adventure. I found Jennifer kind of difficult to control, so i looked up what everything does on the snes. I assume that the buttons are similar on the ps1, just instead of y there is square or something like that. Before reading this i didn't realize i was making her panic everywhere which wasn't to my advantage.

**EDIT** So- I've now dumped maybe an hour and a half trying to get past the first scissorman. omfg. That guy is a beast. I thought i got away from him once by being up in this loft where the car was, but it turns out he just burst from the ceiling scissors first and killed me. A fucking beast of a little man.
Clock Tower is a fairly simple, yet unique, game to play. It's a point and click adventure, one
of the first to appear as a console game. This annoys many people, but if you're into the game
enough to be reading this walkthrough, then you probably aren't too annoyed, or you just won't
let something like that get in the way of this game. Here are some of the main points of
gameplay:

Controls:(According to SNES Control Pad)
Y: Action Button. Used for most
things, walking, searching, talking, opening
doors, etc.

B: Panic Button. Used to get you out
of dangerous situations.

A: Item Button. Used to observe and
go through your inventory.

X: Makes Jennifer stop walking or running
and come to a rest.

Start: As in most games, used to Pause.

Direction Pad: Moves the mouse-style cursor.

L: Run Left.

R: Run Right.

--In order to move Jennifer, click in any direction, but not on an object.. She will
walk in the direction you click. To make Jennifer run, there are two methods. Situate
the cursor on the side you want her to run to and double click, OR press the L and R
buttons(for the SNES equivalent, not your keyboard if you have an emulator) which makes
her run in the corresponding direction.

--In order to talk to people or search items, and open doors, situate the cursor over the
item/person/door, and if it can be searched, opened, or if they can be talked to, the cursor
should become a bracket, enclosing the desired destination. Then, simply click with the action
button. Voila!

--When you're in danger, it will help to become familiar with the panic button. Whenever your in
danger, and you can't hide and are forced into confrontation (Or, at a certain time, when you
must flee), tapping the panic button rapidly can help you to escape. Just keep tapping until
you are safe. When you want to use an object or exit a door, or climb up an area, etc, etc,
to defend yourself, remember to click on it with the action button first, then start hitting the
panic button. In short, this button provides Jennifer with the resourcefulness and adrenaline
she will need to survive.

--Know when to hide, and choose your hiding places wisely. When being tracked by the Terrors of Clock Tower, there's a chance you'll mess up and die if you're not careful. Pay attention to every
option and possibility. Once you've found a hiding place, click on it to use it to your survival needs.

--Pay attention to Jennifer's picture. The color behind the picture determines how strong Jennifer is.
Looking death in the eye is certainly known to deplete one's strength. Here is a list of the
colors, and what level of strength they represent.

Blue--Full Strength. You're doing pretty well, and
the odds are, with good use of the panic button,
you'll be able to survive, assuming you know what
resources to use and what places to hide.

Green--Reasonable Strength. You're still doing
okay, but you've been startled. You're probably
doing as well off as with Blue Strength, but
just beware not to lose much more strength..

Yellow--You're pretty low on strength. You still
have strengh left, but it would be wise to avoid
depleting that last bit of strength at all costs.

Red--You've used up all of your adrenaline and
strength. If you have to escape from a situation,
you'd best do so by means other than those
requiring the panic button, as it's success rate
is questionable (though not impossible) in this
state of wild fear and fatigue. That means a
really close encounter will more likely result in
your death.

Your strength goes down a level or more whenever you do something strenuous, or go through
a startling or terrifying experience. It rebuilds, as you have time to rest and/or calm down, but
this takes a while. As such, try to avoid such strength depleting situations whenever possible,
such as by hiding as opposed to fighting. Jennifer's picture is also helpful for other
reasons. When it flashes, then you're in grave danger. This is usually when you must use the
panic button, and is usually a sign that your strength will be depleted a level. Also,
when the picture closes in on Jennifer's eye, showing surprise, the meaning, which is often
obvious, is that danger is very near, but escapable without use of the panic button. This
is USUALLY a warning to start making tracks!

IF YOU DIE: If you fall victim to the terror running rampant throughout Clock Tower's corridors, then
you'll get the game over screen, saying "DEAD END." Don't worry, and certainly don't shut the game off, because you can choose continue at the title screen and start right back in the room where you met your demise, at the same point in the game.

Not entirely sure why, but I always really enjoyed the original Clock Tower. Never bothered with any of the others.

I'm trying the translated SNES version right now, and I can safely say that this is a game that I'm going to have to play through soon. I'll actually put it on deck for when I finish Policenauts. The atmosphere is so creepy... Any other games that are like this?

In what way?

If you mean point-and-click adventure, I would try the Darkseed series or Phantasmagoria. If you mean "run from a psychopath," I would suggest the other games in the series(especially Clock Tower on the PS1), as well as Haunting Ground for the PS2. Clock Tower 3 is drastically different from the others in terms of control, and its story comes off as campy, but I still had a great time running my ass off from the various psychos in it.

As for compatibility, no, the SNES mouse isn't compatible, though if you're playing the PS1 port of the original game, it is compatible with the PS1 mouse.

D for the Sega saturn, 3DO, Playstation, PC. It is a survival horror/puzzle game released in 1995 by WARP. One of the first games released by the company, it featured 3D CGI, and introduced the woman who would star in all future warp games, Laura.

D is the first 100% CGI game made. At the time of release, D was well received, but like many games that made use of full motion video for gameplay, it has not aged well. Game Informer lists the game among the worst horror games of all time but clearly they don't know what they are talking about.

D is also one of the few 'long box' ps1 games.

The game begins when Laura Harris is contacted by Los Angeles police, receiving a disturbing message: her father, Dr. Richter Harris, has gone on a mass murdering spree and has now barricaded himself in the hospital. In a panic, Laura rushes to the scene of the crime, desperate to find an explanation for the well-respected doctor's actions. Upon entering the hospital, she is instantly horrified at the scattered and grotesquely mutilated bodies lying about the dark halls of the hospital. Inching slowly forward, she is taken by a small metallic entity to an unknown dark castle.

Just a heads up, I don't think there are any save points or pausing for this game. It is meant to be played in one sitting and you are under a timer (which is generous) for 2 hours.

Happy video game nerd reviewing 'D'

First 10 minutes of D. In german i think, so perhaps minimal spoils.
