Maybe if Bush had been a little more financially responsible and NOT sent those checks to placate the middle class...
It's a well supported fact that the economy of the first few years of any presidency are the result of policies put into place in the previous term - there's a 2-3 year window for the economy to catch up. Any look back through U.S. history basically confirms this (with some notable footnotes along the way such as the economy post WW2, which had little to do with fiscal policy).
The current state of the economy has VERY LITTLE to do with Obama's policies - even though he is trying to what he can to fix it. It will likely be 2 more years before we know if his ideas were good ones. I suspect some were, some weren't, but overall we'll be better off.
Even Obama thinks that this prize is ridiculous and undeserved and has more or less said so. Anyone who has been following the NPP committee would know that they have been becoming more political and less discriminating in their choices. I doubt Obama will cite it very often in speeches or flaunt it in anyway.
On the other hand, I think he
does deserve all the accolades for being the first black president. To claim that he hasn't accomplished anything is pretty ignorant of the history of racism in this country and blind to how much of it is still going on. In this country someone of his background IS considered black, even if you think it's silly. For a black person to become president - that was completely unthinkable even a decade or two ago.
No, he hasn't accomplished much as president just yet, but it's not like many people (including himself) are claiming otherwise. He is working on fixing big problems left to him and all of it takes time. In any case I see the current government deadlock/failures as the result of Congressional infighting and lobby dependency more than a direct fault of his. Sure, I have been disappointed with some of his decisions along the way, but overall it is far too early to bring in the jury...
